Question

How can I save a photo in .JPG after editing it with a blending mode without loosing resolution?

I am editing pictures to be sent to Shutterfly to be put in a Photo Book.  I want to use the blending mode "Screen" because it lightens the picture better than any other method.  After the edit, the file name has the extension .psd with a resolution 288.  Shutterfly needs a resolution around 300.  However, it does not accept a .psd file extension.  It has to be .JPG.  When I save the picture as a .JPG file, it reduces the resolution to 70 with a picture size of 6 x 4.  When it is uploaded to Shutterfly, it is fuzzy.  How can I use the Blending Mode "Screen", or any of the blending modes, and retain the original resolution of the picture?

If you are so inclined and provide us with more information, perhaps we can help you.

What is the resolution of the original photo-file?

Is the photo "fuzzy" to begin with?

Do you wish to "brighten" the entire picture or just portion(s) of it?

It would really help if you post a representative picture for us to look at,

Blend modes apply to layers and the jpeg format can't save layers. So, whatever way you use to lighten your image, you have a finished (flattened) image without blend mode and the effect applied.

How do you save your image? 'Save As' or 'Save for Web'?

Do you resize? Saving in another format should not change anything to your pixel dimensions except that 'Save for web' lets you resize at the same time.

What is the resolution, file type, and pixel size of the original photo?
