How can one remove a question mark from the upper left corner of a photo if the photo does not have another to connect to. I use windows 10 and elements 15.

The question mark means that the thumbnail was created from a photo file which is no longer in the same location on your disk now as when it was created. The original file may have been deleted, moved or renamed.

Your question suggests that you have not succeeded in 'reconnecting' the file (for instance deleted file). So, what you have to do is to delete the entry in the catalog (which will delete also the thumbnail in the thumbnail cache).

So, you don't delete the question mark, you delete all the information associated with that file (exif, keywords, captions... and the thumbnail).
