Question

How to create new keyword tag under place sub category in PE15?

Hi,  Having just 'upgraded' from PE11 to PE15, I cannot see any way of creating a new place keyword tag under a place sub category. Is this still possible?

I have previously been creating place sub categories (eg Egypt) and then creating a number of subsidiary location keyword tags (eg Pyramids, Nile etc). I very much hope that I am still able to do this, otherwise I shall be reverting to PE11! Advice greatly appreciated. Thanks. Mike

Hi Mike,

The since PSE 12, Places and places tags were upgraded to support storing GPS coordinates. So, the new tags created through Places view are not compatible with the old tags since they now hold GPS info too which can be interpreted across all the supporting software.

You can associate photos and videos with the places where they were taken. Elements Organizer maintains the location information and helps you find and organize these photos and videos.
Google Maps is integrated with Elements Organizer, so you can associate a photo or video with a place on the map by a simple drag-and-drop or by searching for the place. Elements Organizer adds a pin and displays the number of media files associated with the place. If your photos and videos have GPS information, Elements Organizer automatically places them on the map in the correct location.Use the Places view to displays and organize media files based on the location information.

You can still continue to create new tags with sub-categories but you will have to use Keywords Panel for that.

Please refer page Tag your media in Elements Organizer for help on creating Keyword tags and subcategories and Adding and managing places in Elements Organizer for help on enhanced Places.

Please revert if you more queries.

Thanks,

Ankit

Hi Ankit,

Thank you for your comprehensive reply. I appreciate the benefits of being able to use GPS co-ordinates (although I wonder how many people use this facility on their cameras, as it consumes so much battery power!) and being able to associate pictures with locations on a Google Map. However, I think that it is a major disadvantage that one is no longer able to easily create place sub categories and key word tags, of one's own choosing, without geo-location data. I often want to tag photographs with not only the location that the photograph was taken but also the location of the place being photographed (eg a distant mountain). It is also extremely disappointing that one is unable to continue 'place' tagging structures that one has previously implemented. It would be useful if you could create new (geo) location tags under previously created place sub categories or be able to 'drag' new tags into the desired location. Given that you can still create sub categories and key word tags in the Keywords Panel, it would be desirable that you could drag (or cut & paste) previously created place tags (ie from PE11 or earlier) into the Keyword area and/or transfer newly created location sub category and key word tags into the Places area. I hope that you will give this matter further consideration for future 'upgrades'. In the meantime, I can only say that I feel rather frustrated and disappointed with the upgrade, having put so much time and effort into location tagging my existing collection. I do, however, appreciate some of the other enhancements and features of PE15.

Kind regards

Mike

It is also extremely disappointing that one is unable to continue 'place' tagging structures that one has previously implemented.

You are still able to use the place tagging you have previously implemented...

...provided you just rename the 'Places' old category to something like 'MyPlaces' before converting the old catalogs. That way, that category is just like any 'custom' category you can create, ignoring the Places, People and Events new categories introduced in PSE12 (I thought it was on PSE11?)

There will be no automatic conversion to the new categories. That's what I did.

If you still have your old catalog, you are still able to do the renaming in the old PSE and to re-convert it to the PSE15 format.
