I cannont type text with PhotoShop Elements 2018

I just purchased Photoshop Elements 2018. I upgraded on to a new computer--I was using Photoshop Elements 10 on that one. I had no problem typing text with 10, but as soon as I place the cursor onto the image I am working on the green check mark and the red slash button appear. What am I doing wrong? I'm using Windows 10 now. I tried to cut and paste on to the image--that does not work either.
