NEF and Lightroom. DOES NOT recognize

I just started to shoot in raw only to find out what I bought is not what I got.  I keep getting error messages not recognize NEF files.  I can't use elements even though it is supposed to recognize it.  Adobe does not offer support other than forums.  Any suggestions?
