Opening cr 2 files

New Here ,
Mar 23, 2018 Mar 23, 2018

I just recently upgraded my camera (a Rebel EOS T3 to a Canon EOS 6d. )  when i shot in Raw on the Rebel my CR2 raw files would open with photoshop.  With the 6d  i get the message that the CR2 files are the wrong type of file.  I am using Photoshop Elements 9.  Is there a upgrade available that will allow me to open these files when shooting in raw?

Yes, you could upgrade to photoshop elements 2018, which will open the Canon EOS 6d cr2s.

Easy Photo & Video Editing Software | Adobe Elements Family

or you could use the adobe dng converter to convert the cr2 files to dng copies, which then pse 9 should open.

Cameras supported by Camera Raw

Camera Raw plug-in and Adobe application compatibility

The answers are found at the two links above.

The Rebel EOS T3 was first supported by Camera Raw 6.4 which is compatible with Elements 9 and later. So that worked OK.

Is your new camera:

  • a 6D (released in 2012, first supported in Camera Raw 7.3) or
  • a 6D Mark II (released mid-2017, first supported in Camera Raw 9.12)? - I'm guessing this one

Either way, Elements 9 is only compatible with Camera Raw up to version 6.5 and no further updates are available. In other words, your new 6D camera is not supported by Elements 9.

Options:

  1. Upgrade to Photoshop Elements 2018 and open Raw files from your new camera, or
  2. Free option: download the free Adobe DNG converter, batch convert all 6D Raw files to DNG format then edit the DNG files (not the Raw files from the camera) in Elements 9. An extra step for you but no extra cost. You can keep using Elements 9 if you convert to DNG
