Question

Organizer of Photoshop Elements 2018 crashes the whole PC every time when searching for faces

Hello together,

I have read the posts on other versions and have done the following:

- reinstalled the product

- renamed the organizer preferences file

- modified the preferences to exclude looking for missing files

Above measures have improved the situation but not resolved it.

After some time, this can be minutes to hours, the organizer crashes the whole PC such that it reacts to nothing anymore.
I have to do a hard-boot every time.

I am running Windows 10 with 10GB RAM

Windows application error log says:

Source SidebySide Event 33

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Elements 2018\MPEGHDVExport.exe". Dependent Assembly Plug-ins\Common\TSStrider,type="win32",version="1.0.0.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

It seems to be missing a plugin ,but a reinstall does not change this.

This keeps appearing, but at the wrong times.

After a crash there is nothing in the application log.

One additional point:

I just discovered that if I minimize the application and just let it run it completely by itself, without using it, it does not crash.

That is of course better, but not really acceptable.

It now has gone through some 30000 pictures and scanned the faces.

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Kai

I have the same issue, thought it was my machine so went out last weekend and bought a new rig with 1080 graphics card, 16 gigs of memory with i7-8700k 3.7ghz processor. I reinstalled my adobe 18 elements/premier software, started the organizer and it started tagging faces 25,190 photos to go thru, took 4 straight days to finish . Started naming them and just like on my old machine the entire system freezes nothing responds and like you only way to get my machine back is hard reboot . Two error boxes pop up which had to use my phone to take picture as I couldn't do anything else. So now I've come to the conclusion that its the software not my machine nor my other machine. I'm running windows 10 home 64bit. Looking on the internet, this seems to be a problem that's plagued folks for many version, do you guys test the software or do you just slap another version number on it and sell it as a new. This is ridiculous.

I am a long-time Windows / Lightroom / Creative Cloud user on a Dell core i5/8GB system, and recently purchased Premiere Elements 18 so I can do some simple  video work.  PE18 constantly hangs during Publish - I have not experienced such full-system unrecoverable crashes on any application since Windows XP days. Reinstall? Record crash logs? Check antivirus apps?  The above posts would indicate that Adobe may be using this forum to do bug testing on software that is not performing as it should on compliant systems.  I have decided to ask Adobe for my money back on PE18 and write off the many hours of frustration and lost project assembly suffered.

HI,

I'm new here after purchasing Photoshop and Premiere Elements 2018 for £107 today, so far it continually crashes my system, I've uninstalled the software, rebooted, removed the original (large) catalog and built a new one with just 434 photo's. At best it gets to about 80% of faces analyzed and shuts down the whole system. The system is a new build of Windows 10 1709 Creator version with a 4 core AMD processor, 8Gb of RAM and 166GB of spare disk in the main system partition.

10 hours into owning this software I'm really considering going back to Amazon for a refund as to me its not fit for purpose.

I'd welcome any ideas or assistance and I'm understandably unimpressed by my Adobe experience...

Hi,

In case you have Avast or any other antivirus installed on your system, please try to disable it and then see if the issue resolves.

Thanks.

Hi Kai,

Sorry for the inconvenience.

To have better understanding of the issue you are facing, please provide following details:

1. How many media items are there in your catalog?

Is this a mix of images and videos or only images?

2. Have you created this catalog in EO 2018 or converted it from earlier version?

3. Also by saying,

I have to do a hard-boot every time.

Do you get Elements Organizer crash report or your entire system goes un-responsive?

Also it would be helpful if you can attach a screenshot of your task manager at the time when you entire system goes un-responsive.

4. Please try turning off Face Recognition from Edit > Preferences > Media Analysis and then see if you are still facing the same issue.

Thanks,

Hi Anwesha,
here answers to your questions:

1. there are about 30K items in the catalog, mostly pictures, but some videos (small ones)

2. Freshly created. That was the challenge. Facial recognition or basic usage always led to a crash.

3. No crash report. The system crashes so hard nothing works. No mouse, not Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Only recourse is to do a hard reboot.

4. Turning off facial recognition is something I did fairly early. It still crashed, but much later.
However, not using that is not an option.

I have now finished the process and here is how I did it:

I have started Premiere Elements, minimized the windows, turned off the monitor and walked away.
Not touching the system at all helped. Clearly it took a while to build the catalog.
Sometimes, when I would go back and check, it crashed again after some usage.

I have not since then used the application, because I am worried about my system.

Hi Kai,

Thanks for providing the information. We have some questions regarding your issue:

  1. What is your machine configuration? (Processor, Operating System, RAM and GPU).
  2. Do you face the issue when PRE is running along with Organizer or just Organizer running?
  3. You have mentioned that you face issue even after disabling Facial Recognition, can you try switching off Auto Analyzer from PRE and thumbnail generation from Organizer and check if the issue still persists. To disable automatic thumbnail generation in Organizer open Preferences from Edit > Preferences > Files and uncheck Automatically generate thumbnails for Video Files. For Auto Analyzer Open PRE and in Edit > Preferences > Auto Analyzer (Windows) Uncheck All filters".
  4. When you mention the system crashes do you see a Blue Screen and system shuts down or the Organizer crashes or your system goes to a hung state where you have to hard reboot the system? It would be helpful if you can provide any information about the crash/hang. Any error codes or crash dumps. I am attaching a Windows registry file. After running this file, if Organizer will crash it will create crash dumps in C:\DumpStore. You can check the folder for application dumps after facing the issue.

Thanks
