Question

Photoshop Elements v.16 won't open photos

Using PSE 16 on Windows 10 on my desktop PC. When I click on a photo file (.jpg, etc) in my File Explorer or even an email attachment, then click Open (PSE is my default editor), the PSE Editor opens but the photo does not. I just get a blank editor.

I can first open PSE, then File > Open and browse for a photo, and that works fine, so I don't think the problem is the type of photo, etc. It's just PSE.

Thanks. Any advice is much appreciated.

    Hi there,

Sorry to hear that you're not able to open images in Photoshop Elements 16, could you please let us know are you getting any sort of error?

Also, have you downloaded the images from the internet?

Could you try resetting the preferences of Photoshop Elements and let us know if it helps? Preference file locations for Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements

    Regards,
    Sahil

    Hello

No, I don't get any error message. The editor simply stays blank...the photos never appear. When I open Photoshop Elements and click File > Open> and select a photo, then it does open. Resetting the Preferences seems to make no difference.

    Thanks for the reply.

    Hello Jane,

Please try the following steps and let me know if this resolves the issue.

Navigate to the Registry Key: Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\<desired file extension say .jpg>\OpenWithProgids

Add a new Binary Value: PhotoshopElements.Image.16

Right-click on any .jpg file and choose 'Open with' option. Select 'Photoshop Elements 2018 Editor' from the list of apps.

Now you should be able to open .jpg files directly in PSE.

Feel free to reach out to me if you need any assistance.

    Thanks,

    Medha
