Hello,
I had been running PSE 9 on my Sony VAIO Windows 10 PC for over a year without problems.
PSE Licence number [serial num removed - kglad]
A few weeks ago it suddenly stopped working, quoting h/w or system error. This disk was checked – no h/w error. I reinstalled and it worked for a day or two, then failed with the same problem. This has happened yet again.
I have tried downloading later versions, but not 15 – I don’t want to spend any money for my very occasional use of PSE. But I get messages associated with the various downloads, saying that my PC cannot run that version. I once had a different message, but I forget it.
Bearing in mind that Sony exited the PC business before Windows 10 was released (and therefore this PC was never validated with W10), could it be that a later-than-9 free-of-charge version of PSE will work, but that an assumption has been built in to the download or installation process, to the effect that it cannot run on my PC (when it actually can)?
Is there any suggestion you can make?
if pse works and then fails, you have something on your computer (eg, av) that's removing needed files.

1. do not post your serial number in public
2. there is no free pse other than time-limited trials
3. because your pse was probably an enterprise version from sony, your only way to recover (i believe), is to restore your computer to the original setup.
if you think you have a non-enterprise serial number (ie, you purchased from adobe) you can download the installation file using the link below and install/activate it with your single-user serial number.
Downloadable installation files available:
Download and installation help for Adobe links
Download and installation help for Prodesigntools links are listed on most linked pages. They are critical; especially steps 1, 2 and 3. If you click a link that does not have those steps listed, open a second window using the Lightroom 3 link to see those 'Important Instructions'.

Thanks for your reply, kglad. I agree that posting the serial number was a mistake.
However, your assumption is not correct. Peerhaps I should have said that I purchased PSE9 and still have the installation disk. I have, of course, removed the old, (allegedly) corrupt version of PSE and re-installed from the disk. It worked a couple of times and then failed again. I have repeated this process with the same result (some people never learn!).
I have tried downloading installation files for various versions of PSE, including the latest. This has never been successful, the normal cause of failure being a message that tells me that the product cannot run on my PC.

Thanks, kglad.
I agree, of course. But I had been thinking of Windows and its updates.
The AV (AVG) is a better explanation, so I will see if I can figure out how to deal with that.
Meantime I'm using GIMP when I need to manipulate pictures.
I'm going to mark this "solved" because fundamentally whay you say has to be true.
