Stuck--how to make silhouette tree even blacker???

I am stuck. I have PSE 15. Because I couldn't follow ANY directions I read (they didn't seem to apply to 15) ...I went to the trouble to "paint" over the black silhouette of the mountain (with the brush tool) to make it even blacker--what a pain.

But now I have silhouette tree with branches over the colorful background sky. How in the world do I make the black blacker with millions of branches and pine needles??

I tried Jeff Arola's method with your picture and have two additions:

1. You might have to click on several different green portions of the tree to get everything blacker.

2. I noticed that the sky background was slightly darker afterwards.

To avoid this I used the Magic Wand tool (with the Contiguous option turned off) and clicked on one spot of the tree to select it.

You might have to try different Tolerance values to select as much as possible. Here I used a value of 75:

Then do the Levels layer as Jeff described. The change will now be applied to just the tree.

You could create a Levels Adjustment Layer then use the Black Point Eyedropper to click on the Green in the tree.

(Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels)
