Tag help for PSE

Community Beginner ,

I just got a new computer, so will be reinstalling PSE 14, and want to import my catalog of scrapbooking supplies and keep all my tags.  In the past when I've updated PSE, or added it to a new device, I've 1) lost the organization structure, and 2) when I click on a tag to search for a file, only a small fraction of the items I've tagged show up.  I'm always careful to save metadata to files after I've tagged them, so I'm not sure why this is happening.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It’s best to use the Organizer backup and restore commands to transfer the catalog and files to a new computer.

Hi mollyb,

The good procedure to migrate to a newer Elements version is to use the backup and restore process:

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html that lets you recover everything you had in your old catalog.
- Re-importing is never recommended. Even if you have 'saved metadata to  files', you won't recover albums, stacks, version sets or creations.
- To be sure that the 'imported keywords' do not fall in the common category, you have to save your keyword structure into a text file, and import that text file in the organizer before importing the files again.
- It seems that even if you use that option, PSE14 has a bug which does not recognize the restored hirarchical structure...
https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/elements-organizer-14-does-not-use-the-existi...
- I don't use the new tabs (people, places and events) but for 'normal' keywords, it's always possible to reassign them individually or by selected batches.

Thanks,
Akash

Thanks!

-So, I want to use the back up and restore

-Then, I am supposed to "save your keyword structure into a text file, and import that text file in the organizer before importing the files again."  How do I do that?

If you are using the backup/restore process, there is no need to worry about saving the keyword tag structure to file.  You only need to use that if you are doing a fresh import of your files.
