I have just a very basic understanding of how these things work, so please bear with me. I have scoured the forums looking for answers only to have assembled even more questions... but here goes: Recently updated to OS x El Capitan 10.11.6 after hard disk failed. Reinstalled PSE 8 using time machine and now get error message 150:30. I do not have my original PSE serial number and so would like to just update to a newer version of PSE, but don't know if this is possible. Will I still get the error code after updating? If so do I have to uninstall and just purchase a newer version? What version will work best with this particular operating system? Do I have to uninstall all the extra brush files I had downloaded before installing? Will I loose all my PSE files if I uninstall? What other pitfalls might I face with uninstalling? I will answer any questions you have for me in an honest and forthright way, but remember my computer terminology usage will be limited. (Steps would be helpful.) I am extremely grateful to anyone that has the patience to help me with this. Thank you.

Migrating PSE 8 does break licensing. There is however a License Repair script you can run, but it uses Terminal, so carefully follow the instructions:

I appreciate your quick reply, Gene. Just a bit paranoid about using "Terminal" and screwing things up..... it's probably best I not understand how badly! I will let you know how it goes after I get my courage up. I am confident that it will work for me as it has obviously worked for so many others. Thank you.

Well Barbara, I agree with you. If you are not sure, wait until you are sure or ask some who knows to help you. Terminal commands are more strict than your grammar instructor. Miss a space or dump the .app instead of the .py file and you will get a get a screen full of error codes.
Since you have no serial number and no disc, license repair is basically what will restore your copy of PSE 8.
But then PSE 2018 is on sale for $70 until April 20th, so why not grab it? MacOS is not kind to old software and if you upgrade to High Sierra, and beyond. it may not work at all.

That second option you suggest is sounding better and better, Gene. Would I have to uninstall PSE 8 in order to
install the newer version correctly?

It's a good idea. Use the uninstaller in your PSE 8 folder and if it's not there, I recommend the free AppCleaner:
