I couldn't find an answer specifically to this question in the forum. The previous version of Elements I used was 4.0. I just bought the 2019 version. When I open a file that I created in 4.0 with layers in 2019 opens as a flattened image. I cannot make any modifications to layers any longer. Are there any workarounds for this? Thanks.

The jpeg format does not support layers.
Both PSE 4 and PSE 2019 do support layers on 8-bits images. If you have 16-bits layered files, you are prompted to choose between opening with layers in 8-bits or without layers in a flattened 16-bits version.

OK, thanks. Then, if my files are not opening with the layers available is there a different reason why that would be happening? Some setting I need to change? Etc.

I figured it out, thanks. The layers were not auto displaying and the way the picture shows up is different so I was having a hard time navigating that the pic could be edited still. Thanks for everyone's help.
