Front is all uppercase, won't go to lower case

This just happened out of the blue this morning, was working fine last night.

The problem is that my text is stuck in upper case.

1. The caps lock key is not on
2. I am not using an all upper case text- it happens regardless of font type
3. I have tried to reset my tools and it hasn't worked.

Any ideas?

Oh and I am using PSE6.0

Quit the editor, then restart it while holding down ctrl+alt+shift (command+option+shift on a mac). Keep holding the keys till you see a window asking if you want to delete the settings file. You do.

Barbara, I am running E8 on WIN 7 and I have the same caps lock problem stuck on when I am in the Create mode.  I have tried the method you described in this blog, but it is not working.  Is there any other troubleshooting methods other than a re-install?

Thanks

Sue

No, the text option only works in caps lock mode at all times in create or full edit.

Try manually deleting the editor's prefs, which are in

C:\Users\<your username>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\8.0\Editor

You will need to enable hidden folder viewing to find this path.

Barbara, I am sorry I am being difficult about this, but I really am pretty computer savy. In my WIN 7 I am not finding the link you sent me below. I added my user name and get nothing. I a made sure my hidden files are showing (and they are) but I am not finding this Editor at all.

Thank you,

Sue Potter,

Yes, I found the appdata and deleted the editor file you spoke of, it did not change anything that I could tell, I can still only type in all caps.

Check to see what font you are using.  There are fonts that are ONLY upper case.  Using the shift key or the caps lock is irrelevant.  They only type in upper case - no matter what you do with the shift key or the caps lock.

When you design a font, you - as the designer - specify exactly what an upper-case "A" (for example) should look like, and what a lower-case "a" (for example) should look like.  For these fonts, both the upper-case letters and the lower-case letters are the same - "A".  All of the letters in the alphabet were defined to be upper-case letters.

I used to be a professional writer.  I've used at least one such font in the past.

It's possible that you have inadvertently switched to such a font.

Switch to a common font - Times, Times Roman, or Helvetica, and see if the problem disappears.

I'm glad I found this advice because the same thing happened to me with the text all in upper case.  However I seem to have a new problem   It seems that all the little titles of my actions and styles are missing.  They have disappeared.  Luckily I can hover over the icon and it will tell me what the item is, but the title under the icons are not there at all in the effects pallette.  Is there a way to get that back?

Thank you so much!

On my keyboard, those keys are easily accessible by one hand while you use the other to click to start the editor.

Corrupt preferences cause most of the problems in the PSE editor.

Okay. I clicked on Create, depressed ctrl+alt+shift, then pressed Edit. I held the keys for 1,5 minutes. Nothing popped up. Is there another way to delete settings?

No, not the tab, the entire editor (or all of PSE, as opposed to the organizer if you have the mac version). You do this as you start the program, not once it's already running.

I'm running Vist Home Premium.

Holding down ctrl+alt+shift while I start PSE6 gets me the Properties box. I could hold these keys down for a year and it would still say Properties.

I'm sorry but I don't know all the various vernacular terms for this application. To me Editor means something with Editor written on it. Photo Shop Elements means Photo Shop Elements.

I hate to be a problem but this issue is a major one for my use of the program. I don't want to go back to Corel but I'll have to if I can't render Text. Do you know if this is an issue in PSE7? I need to get this resolved one way or the other.

Photoshop Elements starts with one program: the welcome screen. In the welcome screen you can choose to go to the organizer or the editor, depending on which icon you click. Hold down the keys and click the Edit button to start the editor.

If you have set PSE to automatically start up in the Organizer already, then click the Welcome Screen button at the top left of the window (the little house) to bring it up so you can choose to start the editor.

The editor and the organizer are two separate programs.

Well, you taught me some valuable things. Although I have no use for templates and organizers, I do need to know the guts of the program.

I finally reinstalled the program and got my lower case back.

I think you for the lesson.
