Question

Having a very strange experience with PS Elements 2020

Hello there,.

We are many years PS Elements users, and our work means we use it every day.

For some reason our version of PS Elements 2020 has corrupted.

When we make any change to a project (add text hide or delete a layer) the change is not visible until we click on the gray area of the screen off the project. Then the change becomes visible. It happened on one of our working PCs on a specific project, and now PS always acts like this in any project.

Just to test, we copied the original project to another PC, and now it is corrupted too ;-[

I tried a reinstall without uninstalling, but it is still corrupted.

I cannot find anything like this in your community, nor online anywhere.

So.... has anyone else experienced this, and how to we fix it?

Many thanks in advance
John and Michelle Coleman

Also having similar problems trying to overlay text in Premiere Elements. On a laptop with AMD processor and graphics. I wonder if it has something to do with how graphics are rendered on those.

thats my guess as well, since photoshop elements uses opengl and not the graphics card, i think something is messed up here.

Still no go for me, i hate it lol

Your post gave me an idea and it works for me, at least in PE 2020. It did not work in PE 2021. I clicked "edit" then "preferences" then "performance." I unchecked the box that says, "Use Graphics Processor for Adjusting Facial Features." I figured if it might me a graphics card issue, try that! That's all I did and I am back in business! Again, that worked only in the 2020 version for me.

Same problem here in both 2020 and 2021 versions. Basically renders it useless for me.

Any chance of a free upgrade to 2021 for folks experiencing this?

IMO, there are three chances:  Slim, Fat or No.

But, thanks for testing Elements 2021 on your machine.  I expect that Adobe will be looking into the problem.

Seemed like the easiest solution for Adobe..... but what do I know?

It was my pleasure to help, and we really need a fix, so anything else you need, please let us know.

Thanks again,

jc

@LeDitn, thanks for confirming that the problem exists with PSE 2021 also.

@John and Michelle - jc would you be willing to download and install the free trial of Elements 2021 to see whether you have the same result with it?

The more scenarios where a bug can be reproduced makes it easier for the developers to track down and fix.

And FWIW, I have an RTX 2060 Super card and cannot reproduce the issue.

Hello again Greg,

Hope this helps: I downloaded the trial version of Elements 2021, and the problem does not exist there.

But it still exists in 2020.

Any chance os a free upgrade to 2021 for folks experiencing this? Might be easier than trying solve it for the programmers?

Thanks for everyone's help,

jc

@Greg_S. Looking at @LeDitn 's original post and the ones in this thread, they had the same problem with Elements 2020 and 2021, but not in Photoshop (2021 release).

@John and Michelle Sorry for the delay in replying... I've been fighting a fever for the last few days so having to take things a little slower than normal 🙂

Looking at both your systems and the timeline of events, I think it may have something to do with the Windows 10 update that was released on July 6. I'm not a Windows expert by any means, but I think by default you only get 10 days to rollback an update, so we've missed the boat on that one.

You could try installing the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver on Michelle's laptop (ditto @LeDitn for your 2060 as well) to see if that undos anything that the Windows 10 update might have caused:

I indeed tried this on photoshop elements 2020 and the trial of photoshop elements 2021 both the same issue
I also tried this with photoshop 2021 trial and i did not have this issue
my gpu driver is the latest from 19/07/2021 so the latest one

My very big guess is that it has to do with photoshop elements not using a gpu but opengl and something messed up there with windows update?

For me this is also annoying since i have it both for the text tool and the selector tool making video editing hell.

@LeDitn are you seeing the problem with Elements 2021?  Your post is not clear about this.  Thanks.

We personally do not have 2021, just 2020.

Thanks,

As I understand the posts here, the problem only exists with Elements 2020 and not with 2021.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

I will escalate this up the chain to Adobe.  And I will also see if I can reproduce it with 2020.

Hi Greg,

As you see above LeDitn found it also in 2021 Elements.

Thanks for escalating it upward!

Hi @John and Michelle and @Greg_S. ,

Sounds very similar to this post that appeared 10 days ago:

Photoshop Elements 2020 suddenly very slow when ed...

The same user posted on the feedback.photoshop.com forum community too:

Photoshop Elements 2020 not able to see typed text or selection

I couldn't replicate the issue, and couldn't find anything else after Googling the problem either.

If this is the same issue, it appears to be affecting Photoshop Elements 2019, 2020 and 2021, but only for a minority of users. I think @Greg_S. is probably right to suggest it isn't a graphics card problem - too many different hardware configurations. The timing of both these reported issues is also more than coincidental, which leaves me thinking this might be a Windows 10 OS problem.

@John and Michelle Have you recently updated Windows 10 on both your computers? Which version(s) do you currently have installed? And just in case, what graphics card / processor do you have on both your computers?

I'll contact the other user and see if we can verify this is the same issue and explore any possible commonalities between your computers.

Hello Phil,

Thank you for stepping into this, all the help I can get is appreciated.

Please note, that until two days ago, everything was working perfectly.

OS build 19043.1110
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.3530.0

Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620

My wife's computer

Edition Windows 10 Home
Version 21H1
Installed on ‎2021-‎03-‎31
OS build 19043.1110

NVIDIA GeForceGTX 1650 Super

Thank you very much for helping to get to the bottom of this.

Some thoughts:

Are you using a wireless mouse?

Have  you tried holding down your left shift key, then clicking on the icon you use to start the program?

do you have duel monitors on both systems?

Thanks for providing the video, John.  It demonstrates the problem perfectly.  Unfortunately, I have never seen anything quite like it before.  It seems to be a screen refresh problem.  But the fact that you are seeing it on two different computers would indicate that it is not a hardware or driver problem (unless the computers have identical specs).  When you use the term "project" are you referring to a particular image file or type of file?  If so, does the problem occur with every file of that type/size?  Or is it one particular file/project where the problem exists?  Or am I misinterpreting what you mean by project?

Hello Greg,

Thanks again for the response.

The two computers affected are completely different. My laptop and my wife's desktop.

The only software acting this was is PS. I tested a few others, and also used Premier Elements 2020 and all seems to be well.

The problem now exists for all photoshop jobs.

When I speak of a project, I speak of a PSD file. I am kind of guessing that this was the problem, because my laptop "seemed" to be working before we made the test and copied it over.

If you like, we can send you the PSD....  I hope it does not corrupt your system too...

It is 88.2 MB... so we will need to use wetransfer. Please send me an email address and I send it. We just tried to add the link to this message, but it does not seem to allow.

We are becoming very concerned......

Thank you so much for your help!

Trying an install without uninstalling the program is probably not going to work under any circumstances.  Given the limited information you have provided, all I can suggest is to try resetting the preferences file. Go to Edit>Preferences>General tab and click the Reset Preferences on next launch button.  This will place the program back in its out-of-the-box condition.

Hello Greg,

Thank you so much for the response and suggestion.

Sadly, it did not work. I have attached a video showing what is happening.

Please let me know what else I can show you in order to get this fixed.

We are still working with it, but it is extremely frustrating, and your assist will be most gratefully accepted.

Many thanks in advance,

jc
