Question

How to create a sparkle or shine effect

Hi,

Is there a way to create a 'sparkle' or 'shining' effect in the tool? I have an existing (logo) image that features 'mobius-loop-like' arrows, and I want to create an animated gif where each step shows the arrow(s) sparkling/shining at a different point to give the effect of movement. Something like the sparkle of a diamond that catches the eye. Or the moving shine in a progress bar in Windows Vista.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks

Method 2: Use Lens Flare filter applied to a neutral layer.

Since this going to be animated, you'll need to make a layer for each frame of the animation so you'll need a copy of the logo for each sparkle position on the logo that will appear in the animation.  You will also need a neutral layer for each sparkle.

For the neutral layer, I would recommend trying a layer filled with black that is placed in Screen blend mode. This is the layer to which you will apply the lens flare filter. I personally like the 105 mm prime.  Since black drops out in screen blend mode, the black will drop out leaving just the flare. You can move the flare around by using the move tool.

There are several strategies for getting a good result using the neutral layer method. One method is to increase the canvas size in all directions before filling a neutral layer. Trim off unwanted canvas after you have all of the flare layers created. An alternate method is to use a soft brush filled with the neutral color…black in this case…then paint away any hard edges that might occur as a result of moving the flare. You can also paint away any unwanted sunspots created by this filter.

If a layer filled with black and placed in screen blend mode, does not create the desired effect try one of the other blend modes and its neutral color. Instead of giving you a list to remember, I will direct you to a dialog that does the thinking for us. If on a PC, press the alt key as you press create a new layer icon in the layers palette. (If on a Mac, use the opt key as you press create a new layer icon in the layers palette.) A dialog will come up. Select the desired blend mode then check the box at the bottom that says fill with an neutral color…sentence will include blend mode’s name along with neutral color.

At http://forums.adobe.com/message/2483355#2483355 I show some examples of the Adobe Studio Exchange "Skip Star Sparkle" and "Reflections" star brushes that Terri referred to in her response.

Here are a couple of methods:

Method 1: Brush Tool + Paint.

Use a star, sparkle, or lens flare brush along with some white paint. (I am assuming you want your sparkle white.) You can use one of the star brushes that are already in your brush library. You should find some in the assorted brush set. I added links to a few of the better ones that can be found at the exchange. These links include a mix of types...stars, sparkles, and flares.

Edited: Method 2 removed as I'll rewrite it using a neutral layer as applying the filter directly to the logo did not work as expected.
