I am far from being an expert with Android phones, but since I have one (my wife too...) here is what I do.

Depending on the phone, I can extract the microSD card from the phone... or not. If I can, I highly recommend using a very affordabale card reader. Anyway, I always set phones to store the photos in the card, not in the phone.

If you can't easily extract the card or if you don't like that operation, you generally use a cable for the transfer. I am not sure all cables do work (some are only used for charging). I assume you are working on Windows? So you have to test first that you can access the phone as an external storing media from the Windows explorer. When I plug in the phone, I get a message on the phone to allow the connection. I have the choice to start the Organizer and import the files or to move the files from the phone to the computer, then use the Organizer to 'Import from files and folders'.

I have found recently that I can also transfer the photo files via the Cloud.

- my wife has set Google Photos to sync the photos on her phone to her account. The files are automatically available in the Cloud, and can be imported on the computer without a cable.

- I don't agree with that Google option (I don't want my photos synced with my Google accounrt - safety - privacy...) So I use the Dropbox app on my phone to selectively sync photos from my Photos library with my Dropbox account on the cloud. When I open my computer, the files are synced automatically to my local Dropbox folder. I can use the organizer to import them selectively. I could even set that Dropbox folder as a 'watched folder' to be reminded there are new files to import.

Tip:

Let's say I have imported several days of shoots via Dropbox. I like to import my files in a date-based folder hierarchy. That only works when importing from a card or camera, not from folders. So, I copy the files from the Dropbox folder to an SD card and import from there. After the import, I can leave the 'keepers' in Dropbox for sharing / availability and delete the others to keep the dropbox folder reasonably sized.
