Question

What data items are stored in an Elements Organizer Catalog?

1. Is there a published contents of the data items kept in the Organizer Catalog?

2. Is there a list of deduced data items kept in the Organizer Catalog?

3. Does Adobe use a commercially available database management system for the Catalog?  Years back "it was said" that the Catalog was actually a Microsoft  Access database, and could be examined (and changed) by using Access.  I've seen posts attesting to this by users who have claimed to have made changes that way.

Note, I am not looking for anything proprietary.  I'd really be happy with knowing about data items that Elements obtains from 'other sources' (e.g. file location and characteristics, EXIF data, manually entered information from the user such as Tags and Locations, etc).  I don't need to know about items maintained for the program itself.

My questions are mostly of curiosity, but there are some practical reasons.  We all know that the file path must be one of those items.  But what data items about a photo itself does the Organizer place into the Catalog when a file is imported so that Elements does not have to re-fetch them when using/displaying that information in the program?  Items that could conceivably be changed from outside of Elements.

For instance,  after importing trip photos from two cameras I discovered that the date/times were off - by a day and a fraction of an hour.  I have some good tools that I like for editing/manipulating EXIF and file dates.  If I do a bulk change outside of Elements, will the new date/time values be used in Organizer?

Yes, I know that Organizer has some file date/time manipulation tools.  And yes, I know that I could do experiments to see what happens under various scenarios (but I would like to avoid spending such time).  Just consider the above as an example.

So are there known answers to my three questions at the top?

Thanks.

Create and edit catalogs in Adobe Elements Organizer

The catalogs were managed with Microsoft Access up to version 5.

From version 6 to today's PSE2019, Adobe uses different Sqlite databases in a catalog. Same Sqlite as in Lightroom.

You can find commercially available Sqlite managers (for me the free Database.NET)

So, yes, you can browse your catalog and change it (at your risks...)

Now, if you are acquainted with sql queries, you can probably do what you want.

From my experience, using such an sqlite utility may be a very valuable help to understand at least a part of how the catalog works, and mainly to troubleshoot catalog issues linked with drives.

You won't get more technical descriptions or help from Adobe.

You can get an idea of the various data kept in the catalog by browsing the details in the information panel of the organizer and in the menu File >> File Info... of the editor.

Also have a look at the components in a catalog folder (the location of the folder: menu Help >> System Information.
