Actions are stored where?

I had to replace my motherboard on my Windows 7 machine, which resulted in having to reinstall Windows 7 and all my software. I have a copy of all my data before I reinstalled Windows 7.

So now that I have Photoshop CS5 reinstalled, can't I just copy my Actions from my data backup and put them into Photoshop? Where are the Actions stored?

The current actions are in a file "Actions Palette.psp" in the preferences folder

Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

Other than this you will have to find the original .atn files

The default location (for CS4 on VIsta) is in AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop CS4\Presets\Actions\  in your User directory. I would suppose CS5 in Win7 is similar. If you saved that, you should be good to go.

Note that this directory is Hidden, so your system need to be set to "Show hidden fiules and folders".

You will find that that folder is empty unless you yourself have saved the actionsets from the action palette.

You are correct Paul..that folder is empty.

I searched for .atn files in my backup and found several. Can I copy them into my current install of Photoshop?

You can load the atn files directly by several methods: IE drag and drop them into Photoshop or from the Action Palette fly out menu select "Load Actions"

It's odd though Paul. I had created several sharpening actions and an auomated Pixel Bender action but none of these show up when I search for atn files.

They won't unless you saved the actionsets from the Action Pallete. If you have the original "Actions Palette.psp" you could try and replace the current one, then you would have all the actions that were current at that time.

Paul..thanks again for all of your help. I have been out all day but just read your message. I have a copy of my

Actions Palette.psp from earlier this week  but where do I copy it to?

A search for Actions palette.psp reveals two copies and they are both in my backup data. Shouldn't there be a version within CS5 from my new install from yesterday?

You should be able to overwrite the existing version and that should be in this folder:-

Users/[Username]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings

For a listing of what goes where have a look at this :-

That did the trick Paul and many thanks. But now...what should I do to to save a proper copy of my actions? Then I can copy them onto my second copy of Photoshop (Laptop) and have the exact same actions on both PC's.

What you need to do is go to the Action Palette, make sure it is not in button mode. Select your actionset then from the flyout menu select "Save Actions" these can be saved anywhere you like.

Hope this helps.
