I downloaded a photoshop mock up a template and I can't figure out how it's done. The document has 5 different shapes and different angles. But has a smart object in the document that is applied to all of them. I know a little about linked smart objects, but these objects are done internally in the document. I want to know how they were able to apply the one smart object to the multiple shapes because I want to add an additional smart object to replace the shape. See below for screenshot and you can download the file to see too. It just looks like the smart object is grouped but I don't know how the groups were able to create the transform for the smart object to fit the shape. Please help!

Hi
If you duplicate a smart object multiple times with Ctrl+J then change the content of any of them, the content of all the duplicates changes.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your response, I understand that, but it is not what I am trying to achieve. See image below. The template currently has 2 smart objects that are being applied to the 5 shapes. I want to know how to create a THIRD smart object and replace it in the one below. I created a 3rd smart object, now I don't know how to apply it to the shape like how they did it. I included the template download link if you'd like to take a look at the file.

Unfortunately, I can not download the file from the link provided above. Let me guess what you want.
Solution 1 (my guess) Double click Smart Object layer to edit its content then convert the third shape to Smart Object layer.
Solution 2 Create New Smart Object via Copy and ensure that it is above the original Smart Object layer. Mask all other shapes besides the third shape for which I believe you want to be different. Replace contents on the original Smart Object layer and Smart Object which is created using right click on Smart Object layer in the Layers panel > New Smart Object via Copy.

If you notice in their layers, they have the 2 smart objects, "card front and card back." Then they somehow use the same smart object twice to do different shape transformation. *see folder card back 2 and card back 1* I'm curious what actions were done for the group to achieve this because I want to create a 3rd smart object and put it in place of one of the card back folders. I tried what you suggested about editing and converting the shape to a 3rd smart object, but it doesn't work. I would like to figure out how they did it in here.
Thank you in advance for your help!

When you duplicate Smart Object layer Photoshop will created clone of that Smart Object. If you replace content on one Smart Object layer that will updated all cloned instances. Transformations are not affected. Transformations can be done independently for each cloned instances and will not affect other cloned Smart Object layers.
So in short: they have duplicated Card Front and Card Back Smart Object layers and then applied transformations to them. Furthermore they have added additional layers and grouped them into layer groups. Transformations and grouping will not change the fact that Smart Object layer is cloned and it will update content when you replace content on any of cloned Smart Object layers.

Thank you! This explanation is helpful and getting me closer. In that case, how do you apply the new transformation to the smart object copy?

Select Smart Object layer or layer group then press Ctrl/Cmd + T to enter free transform mode.
