CR3 files will not open in Lightroom or Photoshop. [Unable to open Canon RP Raw files]

I have the latest updates for Lightroom, Photoshop, and Camera Raw but they do not allow me to open my .cr3 files.  They give a message that the files are corrupted or not recognizable.  In reading the forums, Adobe appears to have a major bug with these new files.  I am on Windows 10 fully up to date.  Does anyone have a suggestion on how to deal with this while Adobe is fixing this bug.  DPP 4 will open and process them and I can save them as TIFF or JPEG.  The .cr3 files were taken with a Canon RP camera which is not on their supported camera list.  Is RP .cr3 files different from R or M .cr3 files?  If anyone has any input, I would appreciate it.

I'm using Lightroom 7.0.1. On my Imac Mojave

Is there any way I can open my Eos RP CR3 files?

thanks.

Not with 7.0.1.

However you can use Adobe's free DNG converter to convert all your RP CR3 Raw files to DNG format. Once converted, you can then import the DNG files (not the Raw files) into 7.0.1. An extra step for you but no extra cost.

Download the DNG converter from

there is an update of Adobe DNG Converter since today

Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh : Adobe DNG Converter 11.2.1 Beta

Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Adobe DNG Converter 11.2.1 Beta

This is much faster than the Canon Software.

I tried it and it is working perfect.

Hi All,

We are happy to announce Lightroom Classic 8.2.1 and Camera Raw 11.2.1

New camera raw file support added in this release:

  • Canon EOS RP
  • Panasonic LUMIX DC-FZ1000M2 (DC-FZ10002)
  • Panasonic LUMIX DC-S1
  • Panasonic LUMIX DC-S1R
  • Panasonic LUMIX DC-ZS80 (DC-TZ95, DC-TZ96, DC-TZ97)
  • Sony A6400 (ILCE-6400)

Camera Raw 11.2.1 which, in addition to the new camera support listed above, includes a bug fix affecting the opening raw files stored on a NAS. This change should fix issues with Bridge and Lightroom Classic opening raw files using Edit in Photoshop.  Note: It is necessary to install the Camera Raw update to fix this issue. Installing Lightroom Classic 8.2.1 alone will not affect the issue.

You can install the updates on desktop applications via the Creative Cloud App. [CTRL/CMD]+[ALT/OPT]+[ R ] will refresh your app if the update doesn’t appear. See Update apps to the latest release of Adobe Creative Cloud

Let us know if this solves the issues you were facing while processing raw files from the Canon EOS RP.

Thanks,

Akash

I think Adobe is also having some issues with these files, as I've seen some post where they will open through PS but not Bridge. So it's not just a version issue, but one with Bridge.

In reading the forums, Adobe appears to have a major bug with these new files.

Got any links so we can follow this up?

In a forum at dpreview, a responder may have the answer.

Not all cr3 files are the same.  According to this poster, the cr3 files for an RP is different from an R or M camera.  Adobe is working on this and should have an RP cr3 profile out later this month.  Until then use DPP4 to create TIFF files.

I just converted a 25MB cr3 image to a 148MB Tiff image.  I plan to shoot raw and jpeg until Adobe does it's update.

The EOS RP is a newer Camera then the EOS R so  it will has a new RAW format.

Oh, BTW, never say "latest" version. State the exact version number. Lots of people think they have the "latest" when they are actually several versions behind.

This is apparently a new model, just released. ACR and Lightroom support will come. The ACR engineers basically have to buy a production camera off the shelf, just like everybody else, and reverse-engineer the files to build ACR support. Yes, that's how paranoid the camera makers are.

If Canon, Nikon, Sony and the rest supported the open DNG format, this wouldn't happen. You'd have support from day one. And no, CR3 is not a generic format. Each camera model needs to have specific support as they come. They are all different.

I notice that the word "bug" is very loosely defined out there
