Fill not available for selections in Photoshop CC 20.0.1

Explorer ,
Nov 17, 2018 Nov 17, 2018

I just updated my copy of Photoshop CC to 20.0.1. I edited a file from Lightroom, used the polygonal lasso tool to define a selection, then right clicked on the selection. That opens a menu of actions one can take, but the one I want, fill, is not selectable. You can't click it. It always worked before. Am I suddenly doing something wrong or is this a bug? Is there a fix? Thanks.

Check the layers panel. Are you on a pixel layer or a layer that can't be edited directly with out opening or rasterising (such as a smart object)

Dave,

Thank you for your help. For some reason When the photo was brought from Lightroom into Photoshop it was put on a “locked” background layer. That hasn’t happened before. In any case, I unlocked the layer and the problem was solved. So, you got me to the answer. Thank you.

Mike

You should still be able to fill a background layer, as opposed to a smart object.

Out of interest - did you bring the image in from Lightroom Classic or Lightroom CC? I ask as a few folk have reported  problems with greyed menu items after opening images from Lightroom CC in Photoshop

Thanks for asking Dave. Actually, I spoke too soon about the fix. Here is what doesn’t work. Open a raw-file photo in Lightroom. Then select Edit in Photoshop CC 2019 from the right-click menu. That opens the photo in Photoshop. At that point you cannot open a duplicate layer or select a part of the photo with the polygonal lasso tool then open the fill menu. What does work is to open any raw-file photo directly into Photoshop through Camera Raw 11.0. You can do the fill process on that file. Leaving that file still open, you can then also open a raw-file through the Edit in Adobe Photoshop CC 2019 as described above.

Why it works when you’ve already opened a photo directly I have no idea. All of the software are the most current versions. I still have Photoshop CC 2018 on the computer. I haven’t been able to find out how to open photos in that through Lightroom as above.

Again thanks.

If the Raw file Opens as a smart object layer in Photoshop not a background layer.  Fill will not be available on the smart object layer.  A smart object layers pixels can not be changed with Photoshop tools and features.  You can only add Adjustment layer, smart filters,  layer styles and adjust the layers associated transform.  The pixels rendered for a smart object layer content by Photoshop can only be changed by opening the  layers object and changing the object and commit the changes,  Then Photoshop will update the smart   object layer object and render a new set of pixels for the smart object layers content.

Hi

I have no issues with opening then working on raw files opened from Lightroom here

Can you please show a screenshot of your layers panel as you are trying to fill?

I hope this works. I should have mentioned that I am also unable to add a duplicate layer, which was one of the other suggested fixes. I'm sorry about the difficulty here. Mike

Thanks.

Yes, I know that everything is grayed out. That’s why I couldn’t add a duplicate layer. Not only are the menus grayed out, but the keyboard shortcuts don’t work. I’ll try your suggestion to reset tools and preferences when I get home.

Hi

Your issue is mentioned in the thread below. Can you try this, suggestion from the Adobe developers in that thread:

Open Photoshop first  then, with Photoshop still open,  open Lightroom. Now choose an image and Edit in Photoshop.

Photoshop CC 20.0.1 is now available. | Photoshop Family Customer Community

This seems to fix the problem. I'll give it a more rigorous test when I get home tomorrow. Thank you.

Having the same problem here - I don't use lightroom.

Restarting Photoshop fixes it, for a few minutes. Then all shortcuts and the entire select menu again greys out, and I have to restart again, and around and around we go.

That's on top of the issue where zoom regularly stops working, and tool selection shortcuts also often stop working. etc etc.

It must be something else that LR did a background layer is locked because it does not support transparency.  Only the transparency is lock Fill should be fine  You can see here fill is available for a locked background layer and it remains a locked background layer.

A screen capture would help.   I do not use LR  did the image open is Photoshop as a background layer or as a smart object layer.  If A smart object layer fill is not possible.  You need to add a layer the fill will work on.
