Question

'Lynda' vs 'Creative Live'?

Recently had a discussion with Adobe support after I wondered whether or not my Photoshop was working properly.  I had just followed a 'selection' tutulorial (step by step) on Lynda.com and could not reproduce the results, even using the exercise files.  The support tech, knew of the video, and what I was trying to do.  He stated that the method in the video would not work unless I employed the same additional hardware and plugins she employed.

So, for a guy with a mouse, and without abundantly adequate computing power, using PS cc 2018, which would you recommend, Lynda, or Creative live?  Or yet some other source?

I wouldn'r have thought that Select & Mask results would depend on hardware.  It might take a little longer, but the end result should be the same.   If you are getting into lag that is making the process unusable, then try reducing the image size by way of a test.  Having said that, I can remember being frustrated when adding to and removing from a selection, because it was taking a while to respond.  This would have been on a mid spec'd Cintiq Companion 2.  I use a six year old 3930K desktop that never suffers from lag when making selections.

To put your question into perspective open Photoshop and go Help > System Info > Copy and paste to this thread.  We'll then know exactly what you are using and will have a reasonable idea what you should expect from it.

I always turn to Lynda.com when I need to get up and running on a new topic quickly.

the method in the video would not work unless I employed the same additional hardware and plugins she employed.

I would expect that the hardware and plug-ins were clearly identified at the beginning of the course as being required for the specific techniques being taught—please post a link to the video you are referring to.

I really like the instructors and courses on Lynda. Many of the instructors are HIGHLY experienced and use Wacom tablets most of the time.  If you are really serious about your results in PS, especially selections, masks and other uses of brushes, get a tablet. Using it will be second nature in a week or two of use.

BTW, I have completed the Deke McLelland course One on One and it is excellent, covering much more than the basics.

The Lynda.com tutorials are usually good. There are sometimes differences in the way different versions of Photoshop work (e.g. Select and Mask) so where possible follow a tutorial relevant to the version you are using.

As Derek asked , can you provide a link to the tutorial.
