Question

text layer styles panel missing in Photoshop

Upgrade to HD monitors has created a monster full of bugs. First font was illegible. Found a fix for that but now can't get text to appear in the styles panel. If I hit a check box (B&E for instance) it shows in the top of the panel but not next to the check box.

CS6 was developed before HD monitors.

If you have applied a workaround for text size (you don't say exactly what you have done) it may impact other panels. If a preference reset does not fix it then there is little left to try.

Be aware that most workarounds I've seen also scale the image, effectively negating the HD monitor resolution.

If you are upgrading your hardware then it may by time consider upgrading your software.

I hear you. However, in searching for an answer I've come across a number of folks with CC that have the same problem. The way I use the PS suites (over 20 years) works for me and I see no real "killer" features I'd need. So going from owning it to renting it doesn't make much sense. At least for me.

FWIW I first noticed the problem in bridge. Opened it up and could barely read the text. Solved that but working in PS is when I noticed the panel problem. So far, only in styles. Of course, Adobe was never a problem solver for it's users. But thanks for trying. It's much appreciated.

Try resetting the Photoshop preferences

https://helpx.adobe.com/au/photoshop/using/preferences.html

Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.
