4K .MOV file

trying to edit my son's memorial service and the vodeo from the church is a 4k .mov file. it will import but will mot display in premere elements. All I get is a red graphic that says media offline. I assume I need a codec? Brand new Lenovo Computer

Thats probably the case.

I assume I need a codec?

From your description I doubt it.

Can you confirm that you first copied the source file from whatever device created it to the local storage (HDD or SSD) on your computer BEFORE you imported the media into Elements? What you describe is compatible with importing the clip(s) from external storage & then removing that storage.

When you "import" into a project it does not copy the entire media into the project file, rather this is a set of pointers to the original media.

your assumption is correct the file resides on a hard drive that i have that is specifically for video storage.

I don't think variable bit rate video is supported, use https://handbrake.fr/ open source transcoder/converter to convert to Constant Frame Rate

The file is in a "professional" propriatary Apple format called ProRes or "422 HQ". Premiere Elements will not work with that. I don't know if Handbrake can convert ProRes. Premiere Pro will. Apple's Final Cut will. The free program DaVinci Resolve probably will, but I've not tried it.

Can you get the church to give you a more common MP4 with H.264 insted of ProRes?

If the chuch can't/won't do that, do you have a large file transfer site? If I have the file, I think I can convert ("transcode") using Premiere Pro.

I have the creative cloud photographers bundle I wonder if I try Premere pro if it will be fully functional? what settings would you reccomend to use?

The photographers bundle does not include Premiere Pro. The free trial might work but may have a watermark on the output. I think you might be able to buy (rent!) it for a single month.

The import directly to the timeline should set up a project with 4K settings to match the source. An easy to edit and view output would be "HD" 1920x1080. Premiere Pro offers a lot of output presests. I usually use "High Quality 1080p HD".

Thanks for replying that you found a solution. Resolve is complex. I've tried it and prefer Premiere Elements for 90% of what I do.
