Hello -

I recently updated to Adobe Premeier Elements 14 (after the older version wouldn't show/play videos recorded in high-def.) and I keep getting this error... "An unknown error occurred while opening the project." I restarted my computer and got the same message.  I tried to start over, save it... and same result. Adobe support was not helpful unfortunately.

Any assistance or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Was the project you are trying to open created in Premiere Elements 14?

Premiere Elements is not backwards compatible and you often can not open older projects with newer versions of the program.

Can you start a new project, save it and open it?

Hi Steve -

The project I started was brand new. It was recorded on an Iphone 11 with an Osmo Mobile 3. I uploaded all the videos, edited it, saved it, then it couldn't reopen.
I tried a second time from scratch, just adding a few videos to a project. I saved it, tried to open it and got the same message.

So far not successful opening any saved projects.

Are you saying that if you start a new project, add a few photos to it, save it and close it you can't re-open it?

iPhone 11 video is by default saved as HEVC which can't be edited with version 14.

In fact, in older versions of the program (like 14) you need to have Quicktime installed to even work with traditional MOVs.

(Once you install it, you'll need to disable QuicktimePlayer.exe by changing its name to QuicktimePlayer.old for security reasons.)

Steve -

I apologize - I have the Adobe Premeier Elements 2020. I had to upgrade in order for the videos to show in the program. I did have to download the HEVC and one other add on to have the videos work.
Correct - When I add videos to a new project, save it and close... it will not reopen.
Playback is also choppy. Any ideas or settings I need to change?

Thank you!!!!

Sorry I have no idea why that would be happening.

Since you have the current version of the program it might be worth contact Adobe Customer Care via chat. They may be able to help you fix your issues.

Steve -

I did and they said they can't help with the latest version of Premeier Elements. 😞 They said I had to come out to the Community for help.

I appreciate your help!

Actually, they can ONLY HELP with the latest version of the program, so I'm not sure why they sent you here. We're not technicians and we can only speak from our experience.

Did we ever establish which operating system you're using? That could be relevant.

Here's something that worked on a Mac.

Beyond that I'm not sure I can be of much more help.

Steve -

I am not sure either on why they sent me here.  I am using Windows 10 Desktop computer. I will read what happened on the Mac and see if that can be applied.

Thank you!
