Hand tool not working on Program window

Community Beginner ,
Sep 21, 2023 Sep 21, 2023

I installed the Premiere Pro Beta yesterday. I'm on the 7 day free trial.

When using the hand tool in the program window, with the window zoomed in, scroll bars don't appear and the hand tool does not move the contents of the window around when clicking, holding and moving the cursor. The icon does change to a fist when clicked and held.

The hand tool does work in the Source window.

User problems seem to have been resolved in later attempts. No internal repro.

Same here.  I thought I was losing my mind.  Unless I never had the option and I am all of a sudden wanting that and assuming it was always a feature.

This problem just started with me a few days ago. Also recently upgraded to 24.4.1. Not sure if that was when the problem started, but it's driving me crazy!

Hi there.  Many of us are still having this problem actually.  It makes moving and adjusting small graphics much more difficult  when I can't zoom in to a specific location in my program window to see said graphics up close.  Please flag this issue as unresolved and give us a fix.

Hey y'all, I just found out that the scroll bar feature has been replaced with scrolling with the mouse wheel inside the Program window to zoom in/out wherever your cursor is positioned.  I don't love this change.  It feels wayyyy more finicky trying to get the image positioned exactly where I want it.

If working with trackpad the scrolling option only zooms in and out (magnifies) the frame in the program monitor. So, this is not a proven solution.

zooming with the scroll wheel is "ok" but moving omnidirectionally with the hand tool was so much better. Honestly I need both. Now it seems to do "nothing" - why is it even in the tool bar? Maybe moving to Sonoma will help.

I didn't realize that it depended on location of cursor.  Coupled with the scroll wheel, I'm now actually liking this behavior (kind of like setting your anchor point to determine how an element, for example, rotates).

I randomly had the same issue. But then clicked this icon (Transform) in the bottom left corner of my viewing screen - and started working again...!Screenshot 2025-01-15 at 11.56.29.png

transform doesn't work. that puts it in to transform mode and actually moves the clip on the canvas. Need to just be able to pan my view. Still stuck with this

Ok, so this is a thank you note to you for your suggestion.

I'm using the latest (25.1.0 Build 73) and not matter where I use the grabber hand tool on the video screen, it would not move. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. Nope. Not moving. Driving me f.....

But suddenly I searched and found this post and your suggestion. Now get this, when I 'touched' that tool, hit the dropdown, and reselected the same Transform option, now my grabber hand suddently works. I can now move the screen around in the video view.

It's a Saturday working in Premiere, with March Madness in the background. Good times. :basketball:

I wanted to chime in again about the mysterious grabber hand not working.

I'm finding as a great 'reset' to use the arrow tool and click on the upper left corner of the video preview screen, so that the video preview screen gets the blue key line and is selected. Now from there, change from the arrow tool to the grabber hand. Then move the screen around and reposition.

It 'should' work. If anything changes again I'll try and re-post here.

As an aside, Premiere has THE MOST sensitive ui I've ever encountered. Requires ALOT of patience. And taking copious tech notes. :memo:

As far as I can tell you simply can't pan around in the program monitor now. As far as I can tell the only way you can move around is after you zoomed in with the middle mouse button you have to enable "show scroll bars" from the program montior settings, the thing that looks like a wrench. Then you have to scroll with the bars. Clumsy to use the bars but I guess it's better than nothing.

I'm not sure what you are seeing, but it's working well here. I can zoom in, and select the Hand tool to pan around the frame, or leave it on the Selection tool, and scroll around just the same with the middle mouse button. I have the scroll bars off. Win11 24H2 / PP beta 24:0 b68

I'm also having this problem... I could swear it used to work but it current versions I can not move around in the Program monitor with the hand tool. It works in the Source monitor and the timeline but not in the Program monitor where I need it. Typically when doing something like drawing an intricate mask I like to be able to zoom in and out with the scroll wheel on the mouse and switch to the hand tool to move around as I'm drawing the mask, but now I can't do it.

You didn't mention, Win or Mac. I just tried zooming in and moving the image around in the Program monitor and:

A) Using the middle mouse button can drag the screen around

B) Using the Hand tool works as expected.

What are you doing and on what?

I can confirm that the handtool (shortcut H) works.  What I would prefer is by default the handtool became active when your on the program monitor.  Right now, you have to change to selection mod (shortcut V) when you want to go back into the timeline to do something.

However, you can turn on scroll bars still, with the wrench icon on the bottom left of the program monitor then the menu selection below (this is from the beta version and I know the menus have been 'cleaned up' so non beta users may find it in a slightly different place.

I also don't like how zooming in, doesn't for me anyway, zoom into where the mouse pointer is.  If anyone knows how to deal with that please advise.

F3, the default is zoom in to the mouse position. No need to hold down anything.

Hold down ALT if you want to zoom to the center.

I do wish they would do something with the hand tool.

  • Like most adobe apps, hold down spacebar to activate Hand.
On key-up (spacebar) they can start playback if no hand dragging took place.
  • Or at least a keyboard shortcut toggle, hold down the Hand key-toggle, release and it goes back to whatever tool was last selected.
  • I do wish for more shortcut toggles. 😉

@MyerPj thanks for the tip on holding ALT...

I was going to attach a video, but didn'tt as I don'tt have a file share setup for it... hopefully my description makes sense.

Zooming to center works exactly as what I would expect...

I tried to show the zooming to mouse position, and it really doesn't seem logical for me,  it sorta goes towards to mouse pointer, but it moves the image around.  I think what I was expecting is that the zoom would be to exactly where the mouse printer is, and if your doing several zooms levels, it would still be to the same spot.

The way it works right now, if I center on say a person,  see about 21 second mark,  the zoom in doesn't go to the mouse position, and if I want to keep zooming into the same spot, I have to move the mouse pointer in odd ways.

What ever is exactly going on,  I was hoping to have it be able to continuously zoom into the mouse location as a target, without having to reposition every time I zoom a level.

This zoom method doesn't seem natural to me....
