Hi all,

The latest beta of Premiere Pro and Media Encoder now include support for H.264 in MKV. Our support is particularly focused on customers using MKV files from OBS (Open Broadcaster Software). We support AAC and PCM audio.

We’d love to get your feedback on this new feature.

Regards,

Fergus

MKV support for H.264 is now publicly available in the 25.2 versions of Premiere Pro, After Effects, Media Encoder, and Audition and we have locked this thread. If you have questions or comments about MKV support, please post them the regular (i.e., non-beta) forum for the product you are using.

Thanks!

Tom

Has MKV support for MC been pushed to official from beta yet? I still get the error in 25.1 (Build 65).

Thanks,

Alex

@CyborgValkyrie No, the feature was added to the beta in early November, which was too late to make the v25.1 release in December. The next version of Premiere Pro - v25.2 - will include MKV support.

How about the unspported video compression type such as vp09? it gets really frustrating when a project goes on delay because of this error.

I am using a normal Premiere Pro install from Creative Cloud. If I go and install Beta version, would it have any impact on my existing projects? will I lose any feature? is there a prerequisite that I must know before using beta version? also, I don't see a beta version in my CC app.

The beta versions install completely separately from the 'shipping' versions. Always.

They are in the left-side tab section of the CC app, under "beta versions".

And when the shipping and beta are the same build series, as they are at the moment, you can open a project in the beta, close, and open in the shipping version.

Hi Neil,

Thanks for the info. However, I am still unable to open a project in Beta mode. I am a noob with PP beta. How do I begin to open a project in beta mode?

I just tried dropping an mkv into my project in 25.2.0 BETA but it says not supported.

We Export need H.264 and H.265 in the MXF container, please. It's a broadcast standard and the only good way to do embedded captions. Should not be that hard.

We currently support a wide range of MXF files including ones that used H.264 and HEVC. Is there a particular MXF format you need that is not currently available?

Wow I obviously didn't proofread my comment

Nonetheless;

- There are no HEVC MXF OP1A export options

- The bitrate is not customizable on any H.264 MXF OP1A options

Just give us the MainConcept encoders in MXF, please

Hi Fergus,

This is good news, I appreciate the decision of Adobe to support mkv once again.

Hi Fergus,

I have tested the PP Beta and the first thing I noticed is that it does not load multiple audio tracks, a feature that I use with OBS to separate multiple sources.  Will this be included?

Thanks!

Hi Tom,

I tried importing the attached MKV file from OBS to beta build 3, but it only reads one channel/stream. In Pot Player (that's its name) I can select which stream to play back, so the audio is there.

NOTE: I had to rename the .mkv to .mp4 to be able to attach it here, so please rename it before testing it.

OK, that attachement didn't work...

Great! Changing the container from mkv to mp4 before importing was not hard - but i am glad to get rid of this step! Thanks!

If support for multiple audio tracks is not added, I'll have to take this back. MKV support without multiple tracks has no value for me.
