Extract Function Non-Functional in Text-Based Editing (Premiere Pro 2025)

New Here ,
Nov 10, 2025 Nov 10, 2025

Summary: The Extract function in text-based editing does not work when initiated from the Program Monitor transcript. When attempting to extract (') a selected range with in/out points marked, nothing happens except the playhead moves to the in point. The Lift function (;) works normally in the same workflow.

Steps to Reproduce:

  1. Open a sequence in Premiere Pro 2025 with transcribed audio
  2. Enable "Show Program monitor transcript" in the Text panel
  3.  Enable "automatically set in/out points"
  4. Select a range of text in the Program Monitor transcript (in/out points are marked)
  5. Ensure all video and audio tracks are targeted
  6. Click the Extract button (or use ' shortcut)

Expected Behavior: The selected range should be removed from the timeline and the gap should close automatically (ripple delete), matching the standard Extract operation behavior in Premiere Pro.

Actual Behavior: The playhead jumps to the in point, but no content is removed from the timeline. The Extract operation does not execute.

Workaround: Using Lift instead of Extract successfully removes the content but leaves a gap. Manual Ripple Delete is then required to close the gap, resulting in a two-step process where one step should suffice.

Additional Information:

  • The Lift function works correctly in the same workflow
  • Extract via keyboard shortcut (') works normally when in/out points are marked and the shortcut is used in the timeline
  • Issue persists after restarting Premiere Pro and computer
  • Issue persists after regenerating transcript
  • All relevant tracks are unlocked and targeted

System: Premiere Pro 2025 (25.5.0 build 13)

Impact: This significantly reduces the efficiency of text-based editing workflows, requiring manual two-step operations where the feature is designed to provide one-step editing.

Hi @David23704957xm2j -  Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.

What are your system specs?

Can you share a screen recording of your issue?

Can you try and hold down "SHIFT" while launching Premiere and check the boxes
"Reset app preferences" (Backup Preferences first)

Sorry for the frustration.

@David23704957xm2j,

Win 11 PR 25.5.0. Working as expected for me. Screenshots might help if my comments below are not helpful.

I suspect you have one of 2 situations. The first is a static/sequence transcript. The extract/lift buttons in the transcript tab are greyed out, and the ' key simply moves the playhead to the in marker. If you use the extract button in the Program Monitor itself (or the ' key with the timeline/Program Monitor in focus), the extract occurs, but does not delete anything from the transcript (as expected).

The other is a current bug in 25.5.0 (fixed in Beta) where a duplicated sequence (or perhaps some other cause) does not update the transcript and gets out of sync. This might produce symptoms like the ones you are seeing.

Stan
