How do I set Premiere Pro 2024 as default with version 2023 still installed?

I'm working in Windows 10.

When I updated Premiere Pro to version 2024 (v.24.0.3), I kept version 2023 still installed because I have a work in progress that uses PP 2023.

However, try to open a Premiere Pro project file by double clicking on it, even if the project was created entirely in version 2024, it tries to open in version 2023 by default. I also don't see Premiere Pro 2024 as an option among apps to open with, when I right-click on the file and choose "Open with..." or when I try to change the default application to open with in the "Opens with..." dialog in the file Properties, Premiere Pro 2024 is not among the options there as well.

Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Yes, Windows or mac?

You can't open Premiere in the right version, or you can't open a specific project file?

This thread has been about Windows 'default' behavior, opening the latest (or wanted) version of Premiere. But you mention won't open a file ... which would be a project. So I'm asking.

I also have this problem and seems to be still happening. I have PP24 and used that to open, but i still cant open my file.

I had this problem. I did nothing special, but now with PR Release 24.5.0 and Beta 24.6.0.xx, I see that I have "Open With" active for all the versions of PR I have installed, including PR 2024.

When I double-clicked a .prproj file, I get the "always use" dialogue, with PR2024 as an option, and with PR2023 still the default. I used that dialogue to change to 2024. And now double-click opens PR 2024.

No idea what changed. Win 10.

Hello,

I'm Kevin, one of the moderators here. Has anyone else tested Beta with this bug? Are you having the same experience as Stan? Let the team know. I hope the bug will be fixed soon. Sorry for the frustration.

Thanks,
Kevin

I can confirm it still happens. Opening with 2024 is not an option, in Win settings you can't select anything else. Same goes for .prtextstyle.

I finally updated to 2024 from 2023 when I finished all work in progress.

I can confirm this bug after trying many ways to make 2024 the default app.

The only way to open a 2024 project is to open 2024 first.  A 2024 project can't be opened from a project file in Windows.

As someone else posted about this issue back with the 2022 version, I tested and that version for me didn't 'take' as a default. Windows seemed locked on 2021, but as I don't normally work that way, it didn't affect me.

If that's your normal workflow, this would be a pain. No question.

@aaddiiooss,

I have the same problem. I don't know what, if anything, is different about PR 2024, but I have found no workaround, short of editing the Windows 10 Registry - which I won't do because I don't use this workflow. I was using it to test a bug that only occurred when the project was opened by double-clicking the project file. I assumed it would also happen if I used "open with," but this problem prevented me from testing that.

As you show in your post with screenshots, the normal method for specifying PR 2024 as the version to use DID NOT work.

I have all the versions grouped on my desktop. So I simply double-click any of their icons to launch that version.

The current one I 'drag' the icon to the Task bar, so although it's still showing on the desktop, it's also down on the task bar, so simply clicking on it launches Premiere.

I never launch any other way.
