MacBook M1 Max Exported H265 File (AME/PP) can not playback / seek

I have been using the M1 Max + Premiere Pro for years at this point but with the recent release I got problems for about a month or two now which I never had before.

When I export a file with H.265 at 4k or 1080p, the file ends up not being playable in preview, QuickTime, VLC, or Premiere Pro for that matter (importing it again into a new sequence).

The exported file is NOT playable when exporting h.265 longer than 10 minutes with:

- Premiere Pro 2023.2

- Media Encoder 2023.2.1

- Premiere Pro 2023.2 on M1 with Intel Version (Rosetta)

- Premiere Pro Beta 2023.4

This problem is happening no matter if I export with Premiere Pro or with Media Encoder.

Export works normally when:

- exporting to h.264

- exporting with an Intel MacBook to h.265

- exporting to h.265 with DaVinci Resolve

I've not had this issue in December but it's been annoying recently that I can't use H.265 any more for the exports.

I hope this can be fixed / figured out soon.

Technical Details:

- MacBook Pro M1 Max

- Premiere Pro 23.2

Thank you, @Kevin-Monahan for the check-in.

I tend to use Beta for most of my videos, so I already used the fixed version for a while.

Now, I tested version 24.5 (official release from 29 days ago) and I exported two files (once through Premire Pro itself, once through Media Encoder).

I am able to seek through both of the files (PP & ME export).

So it seems this is fixed in stable & beta now.

I am thankful that this is finally done.

But, please, let me iterate:

I still hold my point: taking a full year to fix such a basic issue (exporting a world standard video format) is ridiculous and should NEVER happen. This 100% cannot be in the interest of Adobe, and there really needs to be some work done on internal processes if this is how problems are treated and fixed.

Hey @Chris Spiegl,

Hope you are well. This bug has been marked as fixed internally a version or two ago. Is it fixed for you now, as well in 24.5? Let me know so I can take action on this bug report. I am trying to close it out if it is working now.

Thanks,

Kevin

"The bug reported in this thread is addressed in the June 2023 section of Known Issues"

Thanks. I had missed that. I'm assuming from that listing that this affects all machines, not just Apple silicon.

I am also assuming this bug still stands as it has not been listed in "Fixed Issues" that I can find.

It's unfortunate for users that there isn't clear, cross-referenced way for them to know if this bug affects the version they are using.

@Remote Index

The bug reported in this thread is addressed in the June 2023 section of Known Issues:

  • AN EXPORTED HEVC FILE CAN BE PLAYED, BUT CANNOT BE SCRUBBED
Issue: When an HEVC file is exported, it can be played but faces issues when scrubbed forward to any point in the video.  Workaround: We'll let you know when a fix is available. But if you're experiencing this issue, you can test the fix in the v 23.6 Beta version.

Or are you thinking of something else?

There are bug fixes and improvements that do not make it onto the known issues page.  I like to keep an eye on Jason Levine's posts on Reddit to get full lists of bug fixes and improvements and of course keep up with Kevin Monahan's announcements here in the forums.

Not sure what you are talking about.

I no longer have these issues (at least when using the PP Beta).

We have not had this issue for months now and as @mayjain7130546 stated and pinned correctly, I find the issue is fixed.

Our engineers have found out why the files play back so poorly

Kevin-Monahan (Adobe Employee)
I showed this to the team this morning and they can see the issue

Mayjan (Adobe Employee)
Sorry for this problem. We have fixed it

I note that in spite of (apparently) wide-spread knowledge of this problem for more than a year, it is not listed in Known Issues.

Is there a reason Adobe does not communicate this issue to its users?

same issue!

does it resolved somehow?

wierd to hear something like this happening for months, and not much information about it around....
