Premiere 24.5 won't transcribe proxy files if the original media is not linked

The transcription feature and in consequence text-based-editing are totally unavailable in certain projects. With one of my clients my workflow is as follows:

  1. They create a New Project
  2. Import their media files and generate proxies, as they usually shoot in 4k
  3. Sometimes they start the edit, most times they don't
  4. They send me the project, along with the proxies but without the original files

After that I link the files and try to transcribe but the transcription button won't do anything. Right click won't either. I'm sure I'm not doing anything wrong as I've used this feature hundreds of times. I've also tried telling my client to transcribe the media before sending it to me (I say tried as it was hard for him to make the proxies in the first place lol), but this does feel like a bug.

I just tested in 24.5.0 and Beta 24.6.0.37. Basic source transcription appears to work for proxies without original media, contrary to 23.5.0 and Beta 24.0.0. I thought this was being worked on, but I don't recall the announcement.

Since you have no untranscribed sources showing in the text panel (which is in Sequence view), the sequence you are in does not have the clips added. All that means is that the transcription progress would not show in the transcript tab, but you would see the transcription work in the Progress panel and Progress dashboard.

To test this, open one in the source monitor and switch to the transcript tab. Is the transcript there? Or add one to a sequence and see if the transcription is there.

Let us know what you find.

Hey @Stan Jones! Thanks for your reply.

The text panel is not on sequence view, it has the follow active monitor box checked on. Anyways I've tried transcribing from the sequence, viewing either monitor on the text panel but still no luck. Here's another screen recording of the bug, same project.

https://f.io/SD77TAc1

In the example you'll see how the transcription behaves when its not working for me, and that's as far as the transcript will go, it kind of fools me into thinking its working but whenever I pause reproduction it stops, waiting doesn't help either.

Yes, that's unusual.

Using "Ignore transcription" can make the results confusing, but that alone would not account for what you are seeing.

What are you doing when the transcription progress shows in the Text panel?

Yes, you have "follow active monitor" checked, but it shows that you are in Program Monitor/sequence view, not Source monitor view.

In the Transcript view options, do you have "show untranscribed sources" showing or hidden?

Hello Stan!

Thanks for your reply. When the transcription panel shows progress is whenever I start playback of my timeline, whenever I pause the progress stops.

The transcript view options won't show a "Show untranscribed sources" option. But I did try generating a static transcript as well, following the steps you posted here. I did it on another project that had the same issues, it didn't work either. Check it out here.

Hopefully there's a solution.

Thanks!

I would create a new test project, add just one of the problem clips, and test from there. The use of ignore transcript and some locked tracks makes me wonder if that may have disguised an underlying issue.
