Save As folder location is not right in version 25.6.2

Hi - I upgraded to 26.5.2 sometime last week and during the last few days, returning to projects that had been tweaked with it since, the project files were just not in their expected location. For years I've had this workflow :

  1.  Launch Premiere
  2.  Select the project from the recent projects panel or navigate to it if it's not within the recent projects list (which is always a "0_PremierePro_Scratch" sub-folder under the overall project's name on my drives)
  3.  Once in the project, "Save As" and tweak the suffix of the project's name to today's date
  4.  Edit away. "Save".
  5.  Rince and repeat.

The default location where the software always opens the "Save As" dialog box has always been the folder from which the project was open in step 2. above.

Always. Except since version 26.5.2

After fearing the loss of 3 or 4 of my projects edited since the update, I just found them scattered in various folders. I'm not sure what the trigger is, but it feels like it could be tied to the folder I last imported from or exported to in the previous session?

FWIW, I know of at least one other person with this same issue.

FWIW 2, my Scratch Disks > Project Auto Save settings are always set to ...\ProjectName\0_PrPro_Scratch

Side note:

(It kinda feels like that looooooooong standing bug when replacing a file... Say you have 2 or 3 files you need to relink (like replacing audio-watermarked files with their licensed counterpart, or replacing lowres files with their fullres counterpart)... These 2-3 files are in the same folder. After drilling down the path to the first file, you'd think this path would be retained for the 2nd and 3rd files, but no... you're back to that original, unrelated path you accessed originally with the first file. And a week or two later, when you relink to something else again in which ever project, your new "default" path will be the one you last relinked from... ) --- end of side note.

Anyone else? Thanks,

Same issue here.
Version 25.6.3 Build 2
I have also black screens when "Save as" on an existing files.

I believe this is a bug in 25.6.3 biuld 2, unless I broke something. Windows 11.

PP is chnaging where it will save the current project file, after I export sometig (render a file) or import an asset.

This may also explain why people can't find aurto-saves? I thinl that is alo afffected.

Let's save I've been saving my project in folder "2025-12-20 Xmas party/project."

If I export a test video render/file to another folder, Premiere then starts saving the project file to where I rendered out the test video, rather than where I was oriniganlly saving it. I believ eit also starts saving the auto-saves there, if you have it set to save autio saves to same directory as project saves.

Anyone else seeing this? Cauing me a lot of organizational problems.

The real problem is when I press save as type the file name so I know I have saved my work, the screen goes black with just the very top menu bar visible and everything else is black, which means I have to go to file and close, everything still stays black and then I have to exit and reopen the program which is obviously not right

Hi @Alain D. - Thank you for reporting this. I was able to reproduce the issue and have filed a bug report. We’ll update this thread as soon as we have more information to share.

Hi,

@Dani_V. , this is to confirm that after installing today's update, 26.5.3, the behaviour remains the same. Still very buggy.

Cheers --Alain

I'm getting this same problem across multiple computers and it's driving me nuts.

Thanks @ThioJoe , interesting info re: Windows behaviour.

And the following confirms Windows' behavior seems to have taken over Premiere's...

@Dani_V. , this morning, following yesterday's testing sequence previously posted here, I started in Project A, where I had last left off and all was well. My 1st action once in the software was to import a new mogrt.

A few minutes later, when came the time to "Save As" my project, the Save path was the mogrt's location...

I just tested it with 25.5.0 vs 25.6.3 and it does seem the behavior has changed like Alain describes.

As a bit of an insight, Windows by default remembers where the user last saved or opened files to/from using open/save dialogs for apps (the dialogs are the "Open" and "Save As" windows). Windows itself stores the paths on a per-app basis. However apps do have the ability to override the path in which the dialog starts.

So it seems in Premiere 25.5 and prior, if a project was currently active, Premiere would specifically make the Save-As dialog start in the same directory as the .prproj file. I know this because even if multiple projects were open, which project was active determined where the save-as dialog started in.

But starting with 25.6.2 (or maybe 25.6.1), Premiere doesn't seem to specify where to start the dialog in, so the dialog window defers to its default behavior, which is to start the dialog in the last path that either a file was opened from or saved to using Premiere.

So it does seem like a bug/regression.

(As a side note, based on some quick tests it seems even in 25.5 it did not override the Open dialogs, only the Save-As dialogs.)

Hi Dany, thanks for the follow-up,

From what I gather kicking the tires before getting back to you, I seem to be stuck to the previous project's project save location...

I just did the following and here are the outcomes:

  1.  Start Project A (from the "Recent" projects panel listing)
  2.  Save As ==> Project folder was fine. But my previous session (and save) was in that project.
  3.  From within Project A, File > Close Project > Open Project B
  4.  Save As ==> Project folder is from Project A, not B as expected.
  5.  Manually change the folder path to land in Project B's desired folder.
  6.  Save Project B.
  7.  Save As again to confirm path ==> We're still in Project B as expected.
  8.  Save or cancel out of that save, and Quit Premiere.
  9.  Relaunch Premiere in Project A
  10.  Save As project... ==> We're in Project B, not A as expected...
  11.  Manually change the folder path to land in Project A's folder location
  12.  Save As project; confirm once more after the save ==> we're still in A as expected.
  13.  Exit Premiere
  14.  Relaunch in Project A again (in which we were previously)
  15.  Save As project ==> We're in Project A's location as expected... Full circle with Step 1...

I work off a NAS as I've been for years. No recent change there.

I tend to stay away from having multiple projects open as Premiere often hangs when comes the time to close one... It's all good as long as I work and save, but when you close one of the projects, 90% of the time it just hangs and I need to kill it. Full system disk wipe / reinstall a year ago never cured this, FYI. Same with the good old clean cache / reset everything trick.

Hi @Alain D.

Thanks for reporting a problem and sorry you've been experiencing issues.

If you 'Save As' and select the correct location, close and re-open that new 'correct' save to 'Save As' once again, is the location now correct, and does it stay there? Are you ever doing Save As with multiple projects open simultaneously?

Where are you saving and working on your projects (internal, external, network drive, etc)?

Sorry for the frustration,

Dani
