Premiere projects saved in v25.6.0 cannot be opened in other v25.x versions

We are aware that customers who saved projects in Premiere v25.6.0 may find that those files now open only in v26 (beta) and cannot be opened in v25 versions. We know this is disruptive, and we’re working on a fix.

What you need to know:

  • Projects saved in v25.6.0 save in the v26 version format.
  • Because of this, they can’t be opened in earlier versions, including v25.6.1 (even though it is the current generally available release)
  • We’re developing a tool that will let you convert affected projects back to a v25-compatible file.

Our Solution

We’re building a small app that will convert a v25.6.0-saved project back to the v25 format. We’ll share more information, including availability and instructions, as soon as the tool is ready in the coming days.

We know that there is nothing more important than the reliability of a project file, so we’re working with urgency to get this downgrade tool in your hands as quickly as possible.

We know there are a number of downgrading apps available online, but we strongly recommend utilizing our tool when it becomes available. Non-Adobe apps and scripts are often outdated and may cause crashes and data loss.

Further Details

A bug caused Premiere v25.6.0 to prompt customers to enable Object Masking even though it is not yet in full release. Object Masking (and our yearly major version update) changes the Premiere project file structure such that it can only be opened in v26, which is only available in public beta. Turning this on caused projects to save in the newer v26 project format, even though users were still technically on the v25 release line.

Opening an older project in v25.6.0 triggered a prompt to save a copy of the project with “_1” appended. We know that many customers upgraded the project and continued working in the new copy, potentially also deleting the original. This means the only active version became the file saved in v26 format.

Premiere 25.6.0 was only available briefly before being replaced by 25.6.1 and is no longer available to reinstall. This means impacted users who auto updated to 25.6.1 cannot open v26 formatted projects.

Just updated to 25.6.1 and the project I was just working on last night in 25.6 will not open due to the "newer version" error.    There is no "newer version" of Premiere to open it in.

Note:  I have two projects that I was working on in v.25.6.  One opens just fine and the other does not due to this newer version error.

@Ann Bens,

I agree that changing version to 1 gives the broadest coverage. But here, since I know I only needed to go back to 43, I don't think it would matter.

I did test, and a version = 1 also crashes if opened in 25.5.0 (or 24.6.5).

There is no  25.6.1 version to download come on Adobe. I've got a project due and I can't edit it because of this absolute mess.

@Vinod_Naik2040,

It may not be possible to open this in 25.6.1. I hope someone else has a method. See my post in this thread:

@Stan Jones

I would change it to 1 instead of 43.

@smart_Moonbeam2893,

I note that the staff recommendation for anyone who installed 25.6.0 was to uninstall it according to their instructions, and continue ending with a version of the project that had not been opened in 25.6.0. And I believe this would result in lost work if you had been editing it in 25.6.0. I do not see an official recommendation that allows you to recover work done in 25.6.0 if a simple downconvert does not work.

Note that I did not get the rollout of 25.6.0 before it was pulled, and still do not have 25.6.1. So I cannot fully test fixes.

This is what I believe. Projects that were saved in PR 25.6.0 became project file version 44, which should not have happened. PR 25 is version 43. If that were the only problem, the "downconverting" alone would have allowed opening the project in 25.5.0.

But there are at least 2 other issues. 1) The new masking feature was enabled in 25.6.0, and this may create compatibility problems with version 25.5.0 (and I suspect 25.6.1). 2) At least some projects are saved with XML errors (one or more empty tags) that results in a damaged project message.

I had success (with another user's project file) fixing those type of XML errors and opening the project in the Beta 26.0.0 version with 2 errors: "Video Filter missing: Color Balance" and "mask files missing." I had no assets for the project, and do not know if it would have edited successfully or resulted in additional problems when re-saved.

See this thread:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-beta-discussions/project-won-t-open-the-project-appears-to-be-damaged-error-premiere-pro-beta/m-p/15598021#M12685

When I downgraded that project to version 43 instead of 44, PR 25.5.0 crashes during opening and upon trying to import it to a new project.

You can try continuing to edit in the Beta after correcting the XML errors. Or go back to your last known good copy/autosave and continue editing from there. I do not know what is really wrong and whether it can be fixed without losing work.

Can you please make the Premiere Beta available for all accounts? The Premiere Beta opens the project files we can't open in the current Premiere version.

Updated the Premiere Pro from 25.5 to 25.6.1 Yesterday and having issue with opening the project that was created in 25.5. And Premiere Pro say that the project was created in a newer version of Premiere Pro. Never Opened the project in Beta or whatsoever.

"This project was saved in a newer version of Adobe Premiere Pro and cannot be opened in this version."

Please, fix this issue as soon as possible because it is affecting my workflow. Especially, when there is a Black Friday is coming up. Need to finish projects.

Hello, this does unfortunately not solve the problem for me, i have 25.6.1 installed and can not open the main file nor the backup files, all with the same error of the project being saved in a newer version of premiere pro. I even tryed using a online downgrader, which just corrups the file, manuelly changing the version of the project file has the same outcome for me.

Hi Vinod, sorry for the frustration! If you locate your Auto-Save files, do they open in 25.6.1? The Auto-Save files are located in a folder next to your original .prproj file.

Let us know,
