Transcript based editing not working on 25.3 nor 25.2.3

I can't insert selected text from my transcript directly into the timeline.

I have a timeline with my interview loaded in the source. While following the script, I can't directly select text and insert into the timeline. I must first click on the source program monitor, then insert. Everytime I do this, a glitch happens and my transcription disappears, then comes back up after about 10-15 seconds.  This is really slowing down my workflow.

@moni_so,

Yes, definitely odd. I set up my workspace as you did, added a 3-clip "source" sequence to the source monitor, and selected in the source monitor transcript. I can insert from the transcript tab with the icons, the period or comma key, or by right-clicking and picking insert or overwrite. If I click in the source monitor, I can also insert or overwrite, and I get no delays and no disappearing transcript. It is an 11 minute (short) source, so length could matter.

Yes, I would look at a Mac only issue.

@Stan Jones I'm loading a sequence (with multiple interview clips, to access the full interview transcript).

@moni_so,

Thanks for the excellent response. I'll look at this later today.

> I use method two: load my fully transcribed interview sequence into the source monitor,

You say "sequence." The ordinary method would be loading the transcribed media clip in the source monitor. But it should also work with a sequence, with the sequence "transcript" being the source clip transcripts as edited in that "source" sequence.

So just confirm; it is a sequence or single clip?

You are in the Text-based editing workspace, which has the Program and Source Monitor in a single panel group - you can only see one at a time. Correct? Yes and no - I started from the workspace, which indeed displays only one at the time, but I pulled out the source monitor panel and laid it on the side for a more tradditional look. I have transcript window, source monitor and program monitor all displayed at the same time.

In the Transcript tab, do you have Follow active monitor checked? Deselected follow active monitor so it only displays the source monitor (where my full interview stringout with transcript is loaded)

Are you seeing a general lag or similar in other aspects of PR? There's a moment when the system just lags for a long period of time. Moving between panels takes forever. Restart usually solves it.

The 2 main editing methods are 1) to have the source in the sequence, and the transcript (sequence appearance of the source transcript as edited in the sequence) sets in/out to lift/extract, or 2) to have an empty sequence, and set in/out in the transcript (source transcript of the clip itself) to insert/overwrite. - I use method two: load my fully transcribed interview sequence into the source monitor, select text in the transcript, and cut it into my main editing sequence (in the tradditional in>out>insert/overwrite method (no copy pasting).

Since you are looking to insert, I assume  you are in the source transcript and adding to the sequence. Is that correct? Correct.

So far, what I see in 25.3.0 on Win 11, it works correctly. (I updated to Win11 since my earlier post.) So I'd like to be clearer on those parts of your workflow. The issue might be present in Mac OS only, then? I've used the transcript tool as described since text-based editing rolled out. Now that I'm back on Premiere after a year of not using the program, I find this tool broken.

Hi Ian & Stan,

I'm currently using macOS Sonoma and working within the text-based editing workspace in Premiere, where I can view all three windows simultaneously.

I’ve reset the workspace and rolled back to previous versions of Premiere. From what I can tell, I’m encountering two separate bugs:

1. Unable to Edit Directly from the Transcript

  • Steps:

    • Highlight text in the Text panel (with in/out points automatically set)

    • Hit INSERT

    • Expected result: The selected in/out section gets inserted into the timeline (Program Monitor)

    • Actual result: This only works properly about 5% of the time

  • Workaround:

    • Click on the Source Monitor (in/out points are already populated from the text selection)

    • Hit INSERT from the Source Monitor

    • Result: The clip inserts correctly into the timeline—success!

    • However: The Text panel begins glitching—the transcript disappears, hangs for 10–15 seconds, then reappears

As I was rolling back versions: this issue with the transcript disappearing for 10–15 seconds after inserting from the Source Monitor is present all the way back to Premiere Pro v24.3.

Notably, transcript-based editing is more stable in v24.1—no transcript glitching, and in/out selections behave as expected.

Due to the company’s NDA, I can’t share a screen recording, but here are some system details:

  • System: Mac Pro 2019

    • 3.5 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon W

    • AMD Radeon Pro W5500X 8 GB

    • macOS Sonoma 14.7.2

  • Premiere versions tested (bug present):

    • 25.3, 25.2.3, 25.2.1, 24.6.5, 24.3

Let me know if you need any additional info.

Best,
MS

This is working correctly for me on Win 10 PR 25.3.0.

Are you using a workspace where you can see the Source monitor, text panel/transcript tab, and timeline?
