2024 Audio playback drops out when making any edit in a sequence

  • Issue Since the latest update of Premiere there has been a major performance change in editing while listening to audio in a sequence. 

    Problem Summary: When a sequence is playing, any edit to the audio in any place on the sequence, causes a drop in playback for about 1 second. This is a new issue not present before the 2024 timeline visual update.

    Details: When cutting audio quickly, I have the timeline playing and I'm editing out junk ahead of the playhead. Previously this allowed me to quickly clean up a recording and check my work simultaniously. However now, EVERY edit, be it a cut, or a drag on the edge of the audio clips, causes audio playback to drop out for about 1 second. I make so many edits that I cant even hear what's being said due to 90% of the playback being dropped out. Its really slowing down my audio clean up workflow. Imagine cutting before and after a breath, then adding 2 cross fades. That results in about 4 seconds of missed audio playback. 

    What I have tried to fix this problem: Changing sample I/O buffer, up and down; Adjusting timeline sample rate; Adjusting the sample rate in preferences; Restarting everything; Changing audio output hardware. Starting a new Sequence. Turning off audio effects.

  • Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 24.5.0 (build 57)
  • Operating system - macOS Sonoma 14.5
  • System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:

    • 3.6 GHz 10-Core Intel Core i9

    • AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB

    • 72 GB 2133 MHZ DDR4

    • 4 TB internal

  • Video format: NA
  • Workflow details: Current sequence sample rate is 48000 but it happens with every sequence settings I've tried.
  • Steps to reproduce - (Very important!) Put audio into a Sequence. Press play. Make any kind of edit!
  • Expected result - Edit should occur and audio playback should continue!
  • Actual result -  Edit occurs but audio playback drops out for about 1 second for every edit.

    Thanks @Kevin-Monahan for your reply. I was preparing a project file to send and I may have stumbled upon the source of my problem. 

    After resetting my preferences and clearing cashes I was in a new project and found I was no longer experienceing the issue. After a quick test, it seems a 3rd party audio plug-in was causing the drop out. Simply turning the plug in off was not enough to stop the drop out. I had to play audio in a fresh sequence to see a difference!

    That should be easy enough for me to work around. I'm not sure why this would be the case here in Premier 2024 though but now I understand what's happening. The plug in is quite old so perhaps that is it. Thanks for your reply. Your suggestions got me on the right track! Let me know if you would still like the file information or a project file. Otherwise I think this is resolved.

      hi, I'm having the same issue, every project, and I don't use any third party audio plugins. Thoughts? If I make an edit, then hit spacebar to playback, the audio fades in after about a second, missing the first words. If I go back and retrigger playback, it plays correctly. Annoying, to say the least.

      However, the team needs information about the source media. One way to get more information about the media (codec, bit depth, etc.) is to download freeware MediaInfo, run a media file through "tree view," and screenshot it. I hope that won't be too much trouble.

       

      Though you said this worked in the past, any audio dropout trouble is usually a symptom of some issue between your system and the media. We can try troubleshooting if you'd like.

       

      You might start by pressing Shift and restarting the application. Try deleting the media and plug-in cache from the Reset Options dialog box. You can also reset preferences if you don't have too many customizations, otherwise, do that as a separate step later.

      Check the performance of your audio after doing so and see if there is any improvement.

      Ensure that clip audio sample settings match sequence settings exactly.

      Take a look at your hard drive setup. Do the drive(s) provide enough sustainable throughput for your media?

      Highly compressed video sources can often horde computer resources, leaving little room for audio hardware needs, often requiring a good amount of throughput. Have you tried transcoding the footage to an editing codec at ingest or creating proxies?
