Premiere 2024 Ripple Delete Freezes Everything

As someone who has long worked in both Premiere and Resolve, good luck ...

I work for/with/teach pro colorists, based mostly in Resolve though some are in Baselight. I'm in Resolve nearly every day, and of course, have been in hours upon hours of discussions and meetings and watching vids and such about Resolve. One of the guys I work with is always the person demoing the Advanced Panel for BlackMagic at NAB.

I'm also active in the LGG forum, mostly colorists, and on the BM forum. I've enough BM kit to have an extra Resolve license ... or two or three, not sure ... sitting in a drawer someplace.

I think it is wise to be able to work in multiple pro apps. Both to have better understandings of what's possible, but also ... someday, it might save your bacon or deadline, for sure. I do not understand emotional attachments to corporations, though it seems many humans waste amazing emotional and mental energy doing so.

That said ... since BM has spent the last couple years trying to mimic Adobe, having the "One System For All Media And Workflows Across All Hardware" concept ... reliablity build to build has gone way down.

You get the same thing on forums about Resolve ... people posting buggy behavior, asking for which build others find stable ... that sort of thing.

I think it comes from that end-all/be-all attempt.

Dump your cache files, I think Premiere 'saw' the new file but kept much of it's cached information.

Anytime you replace media with another same-named clip, it's probably a good thing to dump those cache files.

And that might just get this working for you.

I'm able to import a .tif. Let me try to repro on a similar machine as yours.

Edit: I went to San Jose and checked on an AMD-based computer in the lab. I was able to import a .tif there, as well.

Would you like to move this issue out as a separate bug?

And lastly, please allow me to say something out loud, just incase Adobe have never heard nor thought this before.  I know previous Product Managers, like Owen Walker (I worked with him at Lightworks before he moved to Adobe in the 90s), had never been an editor in real life, so it's possible that real post-production workflow isn't a known thing behind the stone cold walls of a giant company like Adobe:

Thanks for the feedback. As far as I know, all the product managers are former pro editors. The team is loaded with former editors, colorists, and industry giants, all with years of pro experience before coming to Adobe.

This forum is more of a bug reports forum, however. Your other comments are more of an OT conversation suited to the Video Lounge forum. Please post there if you want to unpack this a bit more.

I can't believe it, one thing fixed, another broken.  Give me a break.

Importing a tiff image doesn't work.

I've opened the TIFF file in Photoshop.  The image was rendered in 3DS Max.  I changed it to 8bit, sRGB and saved it as tiff without compression or layers and I still get the error.

This is what I'm talking about - Adobe Breaking It's Core Toolset.

Not happy.  

I think its time we see a Professional version of Premiere Pro - A sort of Premiere Pro Pro LTS.  You can't keep breaking things!  And it's YOU that upgrades the software on my computer automatically!!!!!!

Please, please, please release a version that works without all the gimmicks installed.

I've just updated to the latest Premiere 24.1.0 and the timeline lag seems to have been fixed.  I tried some EXTRACTs on my 3 hour timeline and it responds swiftly, just like it should.  So, thank you very much for addressing the problem.

Obviously if it goes wrong again I'll be reporting back.

And lastly, please allow me to say something out loud, just incase Adobe have never heard nor thought this before.  I know previous Product Managers, like Owen Walker (I worked with him at Lightworks before he moved to Adobe in the 90s), had never been an editor in real life, so it's possible that real post-production workflow isn't a known thing behind the stone cold walls of a giant company like Adobe:

As a professional creative the clients hire us because they NEED their video product ready by a predefined deadline.  That's why they hire professionals and not just capable enthusiasts.  The deadlines are not negotiable - you can either make it or you can't, which translates into hired or not.

We rely on the tools we choose to help us meet those deadlines.  The tools' reliability is not something we can ever overlook.  It must do what it's designed to do.  In video editing, for every ten weeks you spend cutting and moving footage you'll only spend about one week in total doing colour grade, motion graphics, picture fixes, audio mixes and exports.  That means that THE MOST IMPORTANT part of the video editing toolset is to be able to cut and move footage quickly.  That's not negotiable, it's the foundation.

That means all these new gimmicks that Adobe create may be used for less than 1/11th of the overall time inside Premiere.  Things like "Quickly remove UMs and ERs" are not functions we've asked for or need.  Professional editors would never rely upon an A.I. to do that job to a quality high enough to meet clients' expectations.  If the A.I. does do it, we still need to spend time verifying it's been done well enough and altering it if not.  It's simply quicker to do it yourself, as and when you need to.  And then you need to cover the cut points.  It's not going to save time.

What would save time is not breaking the basic tools, improving the interface, things like shortcuts not working when you've got the wrong tab in focus.  Why do we need focus?  I can tell you - we don't.  Just scrap it and all of a sudden you're competing with the speed of editing that Avid can provide.  For instance, I'm cutting away using keyboard shortcuts and then I need to apply a horizontal flip.  I have to use the mouse and then drag it onto the clip on the timeline.  BUT, it leaves the EFFECTS tab in focus, so when I return both hands to the keyboard the shortcuts nolonger work.  Just remove FOCUS. and that problem goes away.  I know there are keyboard shortcuts that switch tabs, but that's extra button presses.  I need fewer button presses in my life, not more.

A.I. gimmicks may sound great at the trade shows and in the press releases, I get it, I've been there demoing Quantel Editbox and Henry in the 90s.  But editors aren't looking for gimmicks.  We're looking for software that doesn't crash, that's quick to edit with and reliable in its output.  When we're hired we literally don't have time to fault-find and fix things.  It's a scramble.  The clients shoot 100 - 200 hours of footage for their one hour programme.  We need efficient ways of seeing it all and choosing the correct bits for broadcast.  Transcriptions don't help as much as people tell you, because video is moving pictures and sound in equal measure.   Imagine how long it takes to read a transcription of 200 hours of material!  It's quicker just to watch it and delete on the fly.  Transcriptions come in handy once you have cut a first draft, but by that time they're still not much use, because a good editor will know exactly what's in the cut and where.

Please don't take this as an attack.  I'm offering up wisdom that can help you improve Premiere.  There are more and more competitors out there now and editing is just trimming clips and choosing their order - nothing difficult, it's just time-consuming.  The winner will be the one that makes that daunting task quicker.  The gimmicks are simply ignored.

Thank you once again for fixing the timeline issue.  I will be using it much more than you can imagine.

Roll back to the last known working version while you wait, my dude.

I've been on 23.5 since August. Nothing got added that that I personally need or would use since then so it's like nothing really changed.

Another update:
I hope you're fixing this, as I'm having to work my weekend to make up for lost time.
The wait between each editing function is proportional to the length of the timeline.  For instance, if my timeline is only 30 minutes or so, the wait is between 5-10 seconds for the timeline to update and the interface to be handed back to me.
If the timeline is 3 hours the wait is between 20-30 seconds.

To reiterate,  ANY wait is unacceptable.

Other things I have tried are encoding all the GoPro and MP4 / h264 into DNxHD.  This does not help either.

Just some insight to my thoughts right now:
I'm going to continue to soldier on for another week.  If it's still bad next weekend then I shall have to abandon Adobe Premiere and its surrounding creative software.  Life's simply too short for this.

Here's a tip for others looking to abandon Adobe.  Did you know Affinity Photo will open your old Photoshop documents?  And Affinity Designer will open your old Illustrator documents?  Cool and extremely viable as a replacement and very affordable - No Subscriptions.  There are lots of alternatives to Premiere.  After Effects is the one I haven't found a good replacement for, but it's only a small part of what I do.  I'm starting to think I'd rather struggle with motion graphics than struggle with the editing.  I spend around 24 weeks a year editing.  I spend around 2 weeks a year inside After Effects.  The rest of my time is Autodesk 3ds Max and Substance Painter.  There are some really good alternatives to Substance Painter, although I would miss that the most.
I hear so many people mention CS6 and that they miss it.  Nothing has improved since CS6.  The interface still has problems with its shortcuts not working because the wrong box is in focus.  Shortcuts should work whatever box you've got highlighted.  It's another major holdup in the editing process - Not being able to bang out all the keyboard shortcuts without ever having to go back to the mouse.  That's why so many Broadcast Editors stick with Avid - its keyboard shortcuts are quick and unhindered.

Please, please, please fix Premiere and give us all something for the subscription we're paying.  I don't want or need any A.I. gimmicks, they're of no real use to the editing process, which is hundreds of hours of chopping and moving clips.  Saving 2 minutes on a function we hardly use isn't really the progress we need.

Same problem here since i updated extreme lagy timeline especially when using ripple work with 2 t o3 hours timelinses very annoying...  Ultra fast workstation but yeah... Hope they fix it soon otherwise its time for Davinci
