Adobe Premiere Pro Running Slow and Freezing

Hi everyone, I'm new to video editing and recently started using Adobe Premiere Pro. However, I'm experiencing some major issues with the software. It's been painfully slow and freezes constantly, making it difficult for me to edit my videos effectively. I apologise in advance for my lack of technical knowledge, but I would really appreciate some guidance on how to address this problem.

Here are some details about my setup: I'm using a MacBook Air M1 2020 with 8GB of RAM. I have 49.02 GB available out of 494.38 GB. My footage primarily comes from DJI drones and the DJI action camera, and I usually shoot in D-log. This makes learning to colour grade extremely challenging due to the significant delays.

I would be grateful if someone could explain the possible causes and potential solutions in simple terms as if explaining to a five-year-old. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi there!

Sorry about the trouble. Have you tried resetting preferences and deleting cache files?

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Drone footage is about the absolute worst stuff for editing and color made. That long-GOP recording format is brutal in NLEs because SO many frames have to be decoded just to display ONE frame. Up to 32 frames may need to be encoded at any one moment. Sometimes more.

So having both the right CPU and other hardware that allows "hardware" decoding is needed, as well as having enough RAM to store a ton of images simultaneously. Some GPUs can also provide some assistance.

I work for/with/teach pro colorists. Most of the ones I know, anytime they've got a client delivering any long-GOP clips in a project, immediately transcode the long-GOP to a better editing/grading "digital intermediate" codec such as ProRes, DNx, or Cineform. And use that on the timeline for grading.

And note, they're typically working on MASSIVE "iron", rigs with many cores, often multiple massive GPUs, 256GB of RAM ... and high-speed RAIDS delivering media to the processor. Rigs rather above yours and mine ...

Hi Kartika! That did the trick, thank you. From your experience, is it possible that my 8GB of RAM is too slow to edit D-log? As if this is the case I would switch that off. Any tips to prevent this from happening would be much appreciated 🙂
