I don't get the text align button, it's incredible how they complicate everything.

Hi! I am one of the "theys" in this context that complicate everything ;). Can you show me a screenshot of the issue? If you select a graphic layer in the Properties panel you should see your alignment tools under the Align and Transform section.

Are you working with the Properties panel in view? And selecting the text specifically in the Program monitor? As then, they should be displayed in the Properites panel. 

You have to select something before the controls for it appear there.
