Question

Apple EGPU Pro

I just got off the phone with a really good Premiere Pro support person from the adobe tech support team. He was an escalation from a previous call that was unsolved. I asked him several questions including about EGPU's and the new MacBook BlackMagic EGPU Pro which I have. I've had some crashing but not a lot.

His answer surprised me. He said "Adobe recommends not to use an EGPU with Premiere". He could not elaborate.

Is that policy? Can someone here elaborate on that please.

I'll see if I can find the person that gave you this outdated advice. Sorry for that! We had a similar device running an iMac in the Adobe booth at NAB. Very cool!

That would be because they are still testing things internally. They are going to be cautious about jumping in and saying "use something" in completely new tech areas until they've had a chance to test it out. From talking with other folks at NAB, including mostly colorists who are really getting into eGPU's because, well, the twin 2080's in their rig just aren't enough ... ahem ... sometimes they work wonderfully well, and sometimes ... they don't. And hey, colorists have such expensive setups these things are relatively cheap to buy and test. Yea, look at a 30" Flanders HDR monitor, compared to any eGPU. Cheap things!

It's a brand new tech, and isn't quite as completely rock-solid as it could be. For basically all of them. And sporadic crashes seem to be a common issue when there are issues. And it doesn't depend which app you're working in.

So .. for an Official Statement, yea ... makes sense that it's "not recommended at this time for pro use". However ... all users are of course capable of trying them out. And seeing which, if any, work both with their computer/monitors and with Premiere.

And personally, I would love it if you posted any experiences you have with that rig, good/bad/indifferent. The numbers posted by various users on say Lift/Gamma/Gain are all over the place, sometimes faster with certain things, sometimes ... not. Some spectacularly improved, some ... crashing a lot. Some very stable.

I've been using an eGPU for 3 days with Premiere, no issues so far...

    Which one?

As noted in my post to the OP, more information is always more better!
