Applying Video Effects to Text Layers using Essential Graphics panel

I’m designing some intro text using Essential Graphics, and want to add some video effects, but only to certain text layers.

I have 3 groups, with 2 text layers in each group.  I use groups to allow me to position and scale the text more easily, rather than repeat the same steps per layer.

I’d now like to add some video effects, but I want to apply them to the groups I’ve created, or at the very least, a single text layer and not everything.  I’ve tried adding the effect to a group, but that is not an allowed action.

If I position the effect part way down the effects control panel, I can see that it applies the video effect to whatever text layers are above it, but I can’t use this method repeatedly, as any video effect placed lowed down in the layers list always affects everything above it.  I can’t seem to isolate text layers and effects from others.

So the question is, how do I apply a video effect within Essential Graphics that will only work with a designated text layer, or group?

Kind regards,

Steve

Hi nsd3,

Please check if in the Effect Controls panel you have those separate groups or text layers of the Essential graphics listed separately.

You can drag and add your video effect directly to the Effects Control panel and the order in which it is stacked will control on which layers that effect is being applied.

Thanks,

Sumeet

How do I apply a video effect within Essential Graphics that will only work with a designated text layer, or group?

  • You can drag effects up and down within the hierarchy of layers placed in the Effect Controls panel.
  • You can drag them to the bottom of the stack of layers to effect all groups and layers.
  • You can drag an effect in a Group to effect all layers in the Group.
  • You can apply variations of the same effect or a wholly new effect(s) if the layer is placed in a separate Group.

I hope that covers all instances of how effects, layers, and groups can interact.

Everyone: Anything I'm missing or incorrect about?

Many thanks Kevin.  What threw me was the fact that the Effects Controls Panel works bottom up, while the Essential Graphics Panel works top down.  Easy to grasp (now that I know) but very counter intuitive.

I'll certainly add my opinion on User Voice as you so kindly mentioned.

Steve

Hi Steve, the product team knows about this issue and is working on a fix for that. You can upvote this feature request, as well: Essential Graphics and Effect Controls Panels stack layers in opposite directions – Adobe video & audio apps

Hope that helps. Until then, you've got a nice little trick of the trade (T.O.T.)!

Thanks,
Kevin

Adding and clarifying for others:

  • In current versions, you cannot add a video effect to a layer in the Essential Graphics panel. It should be done in the Effect Controls panel. You can drag an effect onto the track item, as well. Please leave feedback on User Voice if you'd like to see changes in this regard.
  • Applying, keyframing, and management of applied video effects to items created in the Essential Graphics panel is easier to manage in the Effect Controls panel, than the Essential Graphics panel.
  • Important: The order of groups, layers, and effects is in the reverse order as it is in the Essential Graphics panel.
  • Most video effects can be added to control layers inside a group or outside a group.
    • For example, the Chateau de Chenonceau layer could be placed within Group 1 and a second Directional Blur effect could be used to create a blur with a different look and feel than "the ladies' chateau."
    • Some video effects do not work inside a group for technical reasons. For example, the Alpha Glow effect.

The Essential Graphics panel shows the expected layer order and grouping, just like other Adobe tools.

The Effect Controls panel shows the layer order and grouping in the reverse order that you'd expect.

The Directional Blur effect is applied to the text layer in the Group. The Alpha Glow effect is applied to the layer outside the Group.

Personally, I think it's very confusing to have the layer order reversed in another part of the UI. If this bothers you, as well, let the team know on User Voice: Premiere Pro: Hot (5024 ideas) – Adobe video & audio apps

Hope this clarification helps. Great question, by the way.

Thanks,

Kevin
