Question

Banding when importing in Premiere

When I am importing my D-log Proress 422 files from the Inspire 2 I get banding on the videos.

So when I see them in finder there is no problem and when I import them you see the banding on the raw footage.

Can someone help me with this problem?

As PE notes, there can be banding with 8-bit files, log or no log. Depending on exposure & contrast settings in-cam among other things.

But even with some 10 bit files, banding doth occur. First, not all 10 bit files are really ... equal. Some are 'thinner' than others somehow, due to compression or something about the capture or whatever. And drones tend to be in this group.

And again, in-cam exposure & contrast do matter. Plus what you try and do with that media on a timeline.

So ... the more information you can give us, the more we can advise. Including especially screengrabs. Including the Waveform scope (I tend to prefer YC no chroma form for tonal checking) and RGB Parade in the image along with the Program monitor is a great help.

Make the screen-grab, then drag/drop the image into the text reply box so we can all see it easily.

Hi, I work on the same team as OP.

I've made some screenshots (if these are the wrong scopes please let me know)

i hope you can see file names, because i've named them as what they are. Below are screenshots of:

- the original file viewed in preview on mac

- the file as previewd in premiere without grading (and the scopes that belong with this)

- the file now with color grading to see the problem more clear (with scopes that belong)

- the file in davinci without grading (with scopes)

-the file in davinci with the same lut to see the problem more clear (and scopes)

As you can see, the problem does not seem to exist in davinci, but we would like to keep it all in premiere because that works better for our workflow (our company has a tendency to want changes all the time and we are never sure we can lock the edit).

I've chatted with adobe support, they tell me the problem is with the original files, and the way in which it is shot.

I do believe this can be the case, but somehow davinci solves it by default.

If it has to do with how it was shot, do you have any idea what we could change?

[Moderator note: I downloaded all the files, then dragged/dropped each one into the text reply area!!!! so they appear here in the post. As R Neil suggested in his post requesting the images.]

HEllo, in Photoshop world, we see banding when changing the levels in a 8bit document, while we do not in a 16bits one.

What are the settings used for your timeline? Can you post a screenshot?
