Best audio sync/proxy workflow for editing R3D footage

Can someone please tell me the best audio sync/proxy workflow when working with R3D files and WAV files?

I'm editing a short film shot on a RED cam with audio recorded separately. I created proxies from the original RED clips, synced them on timeline sequences and created merged clips. No reference audio was recorded so the audio was synced using the clapper board. However, once the merged clips were cerated they are no longer attached to their proxies. And despite the fact that you can toggle proxies on/off with the merged clips, the clip stills lags when you play it back in the timeline suggesting it is not attached to the proxy. And I have learned since that working with merged clips is not best practice and multicam might be the way to go. But, despite my best efforts, I am unable to find a definitive answer on the best proxy workflow. If anyone has any suggestions or could direct me to the answer I would be most grateful. Thanks.

Hi,

I stepped through a normal workflow with RED and a .wav. I created a Multicam clips with the two files and switching back and forth to my proxy file showed no issues.

Thanks,
Kevin

I tried an experiment fo my own working with Multicam clips. And I'm still running into the same problem in that the proxy clips are lagging on playback. They back in the source monitor no problem but when you play them back in the timeline, they lag.

I'm wondering has it something to do with my sequence settings? But I created sequences both from the Multicam clip itself and using the 5K RED FF Preset.

And just in case you are wondering, I have a 27inch iMac (late 2013) 3.5 GHz, 32GB RAM and I just recently upgraded to a Samsung SSD 860 so I'm pretty sure its nothing to do with my iMac.

I think I am just going to edit using the proxies themselves, sync the audio to the proxies and reconnect to the full resolution 5K R3Ds on picture-lock. I could try the Multicam method but I would have to sync all clips using in points as I don't have a reference audio track and the clips are, in all likelihood, going to lag when all is said and done. It's weird though because I edited another short 2 years ago that was also shot on RED and I worked (as far as I can remember) using merged clips without problems. I followed the method outlined in this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy4MSxZZJRE&t=1037s Anyway, I give up. Thanks for your help.

Hi,

This usually fixes any mysterious glitches like bad performance in the Program Monitor: https://blogs.adobe.com/kevinmonahan/2014/09/10/premiere-pro-cc-freezing-on-startup-or-crashing-while-working-mac-os-x-10-9-and-later/

Try it!

Thanks,
Kevin

Neil is spot on. Proxy is not compatible with merged clips and can lead to issues. Multi-Camera is the way to go. You can try "premiere pro multicam proxy" search to find a number of tutorials related to this.

PJ,

It's a good question and one I should have a definitive answer for, yet I do not.
Let me see what the team has to offer. I think I also may have some links.

Thanks,
Kevin

Premiere's proxy process still has some issues with audio. Sympathies ...

As to whether to go merged or multicam, almost always within Premiere the multicam process is better. Sometimes you need to do a manual setup of a sequence with the media dropped on it, just to get the complete and proper audio channel setup correct for your needs ... then select the sequence, create multicam ... and Premiere will sync the audio and video tracks.

You might try doing that, then seeing if you can create proxies that work with the clips.

Thanks for your answer. Do you happen to have any links to youtube tutorials or info on the Multicam proxy workflow?
