Bitrate for HD Slideshow?

Hello! I've just edited ten videos, and they are about 20 minutes each. They are slideshows, with pictures only changing every 1-2 minutes with a dip-to-black transition effect. Even though these videos don't contain much moving media, the file sizes are still incredibly huge (1100Mb per video, rendered in 1080p 29.97 fps). It would take days for me to upload these videos to YouTube with my current internet connection, so lowering the file sizes would be very helpful.

I don't want to switch from 1080p to 720p, as it will break some stuff in my videos (which have already been edited, by the way), but lowering the bitrate would be fine. I'm not sure what bitrate I should use for this though, can I go lower than 5 Mbit/s for something like this? Will my transitions look bad if I lower it?

Thanks in advance.

~Henriko

Hi Henriko,

Only you can decide what looks acceptable or not. Simply do some short sample encodes, perhaps 1 minute each, at different bit rates and compare quality and file size to see what works for your needs.

The H.264 > YouTube 1080p preset starts at 16 rate, but for stills you should be able to get by with far less. Perhaps use 2-Pass VBR and that will help with transition quality, using extra bitrate just at the transitions.

Thanks

Jeff

The 2-Pass VBR helped me a lot, thanks!
