Question

Black screen on playback in Premiere Pro 2023 project - macOS Ventura

When I drop video into a new project, any video, I get black screen in both my souce and sequence video.

I have updated to the latest version and I have tried different videos

I can hear the audio, but not see the video ro the video is block glitched.

Any ideas of what I need to do?

Thanks

Definitely still an issue.

I am Premiere 23.6.2 on Ventura Intel Mac.

Premiere has decided that all clips AFTER where I am up to are black. Its like there is nothing there at all. I have tried:

  • Adding or editing effects, opacity etc to clips and adjustment layers
  • Unenabing and re-enabling some clips
  • Offlining and relinking media to some clips
  • Copying into a new sequence
  • Switching playback settings around (obviously did nothing as the video is just fine before the playhead shown in image)
  • Deleting Cache Files
  • Restarting Premiere and computer

Literally the only thing that makes it work is if I hit F to view in source monitor and then OPTION + DRAG the clip to replace it with the one on the timeline. Then that clip also shows up. Its a complicated project. I don't have time to replace the source of every individual clip.

I am also having this issue.  PP was working fine, I have made no changes, other than upgrading to PP v 24.5.

Hi @Seth27927988tuzt,

Thanks for the bug report. It's been a while since you filed this bug. Are you still seeing the issue? I'll move this report to the Discussions forum while I await your response. Sorry for the frustration.

Thanks,

Kevin

I am still having this issue after playback was completely fine last opened. Now sequence is black, however, importing source content again (uncut) plays perfectly fine. Very frustrating....on a Mac.

What can I do to get my sequence back?

I have the same problem and 1 had to to switch to "Engine Software Only" in Project Settings -> Generala -> Renderer -option.

"Engine GPU Accleration (CUDA) -option caused the black screen.

This is a known issue with PP and has been happening to my both on my work iMac Pro and Windows machine at my home.
PP seems to really have trouble with layering graphics from Essential Graphics.

Frustrating that such a basic feature like captioning is not stable from a large company like Adobe.

Hi @jason_or_jay,

I got your message. Thanks for the info.

Ok, but why does it play fine on two of my coworkers’ Intel iMacs?

I believe it has to do with the Intel CPU which has a feature in the iGPU called Quick Sync. Quick Sync can take a great deal of the processing load off the CPU and GPU when it comes to H.264 decoding. Couple that with hardware based H.264 decoding and GPU effects handling from the installed GPU, and that might explain why these older Macs operate better with certain formats. They've got a one-two punch when it comes to H.264 handling, especially the most non-performant variant of H.264: 4K 10-bit 4:2:2.

Apple Silicon Macs do not have a conventional Intel CPU/iGPU or a dedicated GPU as the previous generation of Macs have and use different tech to decode H.264 footage.

I understand that the expectation for the new Macs with Apple Silicon is that they should be powerful enough to handle these formats. I agree. Feel free to file a bug here. I hope the team can find a better way to support these non-performant formats on Apple Silicon in the future. For now, if I were in your current situation, I'd transcode on ingest. Sorry for the frustration on that.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hello @jason_or_jay,

Thanks for the info. That media is probably the worst format in terms of performance regardless of your computer. As an editor, I would transcode on ingest to ProRes LT or 422 and work that way or shoot with a slightly less intensive format. Sorry about the frustration.

Thanks,
