Can't move the media cache

I have a Premiere project with 300 hours of footage imported, and the files generated in the Media Cache are filling up my operating system hard drive.

So I told the preferences to save the media cache (and media cache database) to another drive. I then copied all those generated files to the new location to regain the file space. So far so good.

But now when I open the project, it starts generating files in the default Media Cache location on the operating drive again. I check the preferences, and they're still set to the second hard drive, but Premiere doesn't care.

What gives? Any suggestions?

I started a test project with the new media cache settings. Seemed to work.

Went back to the problem project and now that's working too for some reason. Premiere maybe needed a kick in the pants with a fresh file to recognize the new settings. Glad I didn't have to try importing one project into another.

So now I've filled up my external drive with cache files, but at least they're not on the operating drive anymore. With 300 hours of footage, the cache files got to over 550 gb before running out of room.

One interesting thing is that IMS files still get sent to the local Media Cache Folder. They're small, so it's ok.

Even though I don't have enough room, the Premiere sequences appear to play okay. There's constant error popups about writing and accessing cache files, so I turned off the popups from the general preferences.

I know.. it would be a huge transfer from one drive to another... thank goodness I never had to do it. Let us know how it worked out so everyone else can benefit from your challenge.

CARLOS: As far as I know, scratch disks is unrelated to the media cache and media cache database.

ANN: I did delete all media cache, changed directory, closed and reopened premiere before posting. When it didn't work, that's what prompted me to post the question.

RODNEY: I tried a new test project, brought a couple files in. Seems to work. I'll try importing the old project into a new project next. Got to go baby steps, since there's so many clips in the project.

I did not mention that Media Cache is related to Scratch Disks,

just told you to do so maybe your previews and renders are

filling up the disk space ? check that as well ... if those are

at the same filled up location, change their location besides

    following other advises ...

I would delete all media cache in the Preferences, change directory.

Close premiere, reopen and let it build.

    hmm, that sounds tricky.

I never had to do that yet so I'm just guessing. My separate cache drive (not OS drive) is a little small for large projects, but I sorta knew that when I built the computer. So far have not had what you have (where I have to move to another drive with cache).

I think the preferences you currently have will apply to new projects and I'm guessing the old project sorta has the old cache location built into the code of the saved project.  So maybe the answer is to start a new project and get the old one imported to it.

Which would mean, archiving the old project to some drive or folder or whatever, and then importing to 'new project' ??

Go to Project Settings - Scratch Disks

and change the locations to the new drive from there
