Question

Can't playback video on external monitor on MacBook M1 Max

Mercury Transmit isnt working. There isn't a video device listed in the prefernce panel for playback. I am outputting Premiere via HDMI to external display. I can see a mirror of Premiere but want to see the program monitor on the external screen. Is this feature supported in Apple Silicon. Mercury playback is greyed out in Project settings.

I can't back this up with illustrations ( would take a really long time ) but this is what I think is going on with your problem.

a) video monitor is often used to describe 4 things...

1) reference monitor ( also called production video monitor)

2) computer monitor ( usual simple computer monitor )

3) a cross breed computer monitor via a special interface ( can be eizo color calibrated with SDI input )

4) TV

with the reference monitor you will ONLY see what the program monitor video shows you from your NLE.

In, other words, it is the full screen of your program monitor and NO OTHER UI stuff.  Just the full video image.

That is called a production monitor or reference monitor.

please google video monitors at B&H and click on production monitors and you will see samples of this stuff.

ALL the other stuff mentioned above, using an NLE program will show you the entire UI unless you use the option to expand the program monitor to FULL SCREEN.

Typically, a reference monitor ( a real video monitor ) with SDI and other type inputs (cb, etc.) are through a special interface installed on your desktop editing computer or directly from your camera using an HDMI to SDI converter. You can't do this from a laptop. It's impossible.

hope this helps.

Hi

Thanks for taking the time to discuss the video monitor settings.

This used to work for me on my desktop machine, going out via HDMI to the same HDTV monitor. I believe it's a software issue possibly to do with M1 integration.

Hi there!

Could you try Premiere Pro in Rosetta mode and see if that helps? https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT211861

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,

Hi Carlos,

Thanks. I have the Mercury Transmit preference enabled ( as per the article). My problem is that the settings for the video device devices are missing? Not sure why, unless it's not supported yet in Apple Silicon. See the screenshot below..
