Can't see (but CAN hear) audio waveforms in a project

Hi there, I'm working on a film and when I want to go to an audio file and take a small cut I just can't see any waveform, just a flat line. this really complicates the selecting process and I dont know how to fix it or what causes it.

Any clues?

    Perhaps your wave forms got turned off?

    You might also try Rendering your Audio, found under the sequence drop down menu.

    Hey! es I have "show audio waveform" on and I don't think its a render issue because I cant see the waveform when I open the clip in the "Project" tab.
