Can't use handwriting animation Premiere Pro

Hello and thank in advance for your help! Going a bit insane...

 

I'm editing a video and wanted to add the handwriting effect. I've made the text layer and added the "write-on" effect as per shown on tutorials. But the next step is to click the square sign beside the Fx (toggle on-off) sign to actually animate the text - well I don't have such square... My Mac is running Mojabe 10.14.6 and my Premiere version is 13.1.4 - I'm assuming this must be the issue but I don't have any updates?

      Like Ann mentioned, if you're using the newer version you won't see the transform icon 

       

      You just did to select/highlight name of the effect.

      No transform icon anymore. Just highlight the text.

      Thanks so much for your help Ann! Can you expand a bit more on how to go from there? I still can't seem to achieve the effect.

      You need to be more specifec. Cannot highlight the effect? No wireframe in the Program monitor or what?
