Question

Cannot import CCTV video from HIK vision

Hi,

First post and new Premiere Pro user (groan)....

I have a large amount of files from a CCTV system that I need to edit and Premiere pro will not let me import it (it doesn't even see the file). I'm aware it may use some sort of custom encoding but it's an H264 file, changing the file extension to .mov or .mp4 doesn't work (the file has an unsupported compression type).

I have searched the forum and came up with a post from a while ago which says "sorry, I think you're out of luck..", but I'm hoping Adobe have advanced in the last couple of years and this has been sorted somehow with some sort of codec download or something...?

There no possibilty of installing other software to convert but maybe export from the CCTV system as a .avi I believe in the future however this is all old archived footage and I'm just concerned about loss of quality (which for CCTV footage makes it pointless).

You can try transcoding them with Handbrake or Shutter Encoder:

Could you Dropbox a short file so we can have a look?

Hi Richard,

Many thanks for you reply, I don't wish to appear grateful for your help however I am unable to allow the files outside of the network due to the nature of the subject matter and the facility at which the CCTV was taken. Unfortunately there are no short files (apart from the test extract) which is why I was looking to use Premiere Pro to edit them down (although we need to record 24 hours a day and keep the recordings, however if there are no issues we do not need to keep the full 24 hours of recording - to save storage space on the network I just wondered if I could edit them to remove the unneeded hours), they are usually backed up and stored as 24 hour segments and we have quite a lot.

As an example, lets say it is a business and you need to be able to look back at all the business hours footage for months in case an issue has been identified with a certain product line/employee... You do not need to keep all the archive/backup footage outside of business hours/overnight/weekends (but you still need to record it everyday in case of an incident, break-in, vandalism or fire etc).

Hey there,

Sorry about the issue. Could you share your file properties with us using Mediainfo in tree view? If the file is stored in an external or network storage, could you move it to your internal storage and then try importing it? If possible, you could try using Handbrake or Shutter Encoder to transcode your video.

Thanks,

Ishan
